Former Detroit Red Wing Darren McCarty to auction some possessions

The 33-year-old forward filed for bankruptcy last year, listing assets of US$1.9 million and debts of $6.2 million. The first of two bankruptcy auctions was set for Nov. 5, the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News reported.

C.B. Kaye & Associates, the auctioneer handling the sale, listed items being sold including a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 22-foot speed boat, a 7-foot billiards table and a cigar humidor.

Messages seeking comment were left Saturday with lawyers representing McCarty in his bankruptcy case.

The Red Wings bought out McCarty's contract in 2005 following a lockout that forced the cancellation of the 2004-2005 season. He's currently in the second year of a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames.

McCarty played 11 seasons for the Red Wings, where his combativeness, charitable work and moonlighting in a rock band made him a fan favourite.

In the news Darren McCarty has not been seen or heard from, even from his closest friends. And he is not on the Calgary roster.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
