The Detroit Red Wings were one win away from repeating as Cup champions last season, but after a summer of change the Wings had to look to their youth to fill some of the holes.

The Wings stumbled out of the gate and suffered a series of injuries that depleted their lineup further, leaving more roster spots for rookie call-ups. And as the young Wings settle in, the team has bounced back from their early-season struggles.

Ryan Dixon takes a closer look at the new breed of Wings.

There is trouble in Hockeytown, injuries and the salary cap have decimated last years team, goals are harder to come by as the team is going through some growing pains. Leino, Helms, and Abdelkater are going to have to produce or the Wings could concievably miss the playoffs for the first time in many years. I don't believe that Mike Illich will allow that, his personality has forged the success that the Wings have achieved. There is a growing menace about 250 miles west of Hockeytown, the home of the Blackhawks. The Wings are in a tough division, the teams they dominated for years are developing, all except the Nashville Predators made the NHL playoffs last season. Ken Holland may have to pull more than a rabbit out of his hat for the Wings to go deep into the playoffs this year.

Let's hope they pick up the pace soon and start producing like some of the young Hawks did last year. I would really hate to see the Wings miss the playoffs and break their streak.
