Rangers forward Byers suspended one game, coach Tortorella fined $10,000

TORONTO - New York Rangers forward Dane Byers was handed a one-game suspension by the NHL on Wednesday while coach John Tortorella was fined US$10,000.

The pair were punished after Byers received an instigator penalty at 18:50 of the third period of Monday's game in Vancouver.

The disciplinary action was automatic because Byers received his instigator penalty in the final five minutes of a game, violating rule 47.22.

The 23-year-old will sit out Thursday's game in Edmonton and will forfeit US$2,590.67 in salary. He's eligible to return to the lineup in Calgary on Saturday.

Is the same instigator rule that DOESN'T apply to a player like Makin because it's the playoffs and he's a superstar but DOES apply to a guy up from the A? You just have to love the consistency that comes out of Colin Campbell's office. File this under "Why non-hockey fans consider hockey a joke."
