Rumor Roundup: Motor mouths

CBC hockey analyst Scott Morrison recently wondered if the performance of Detroit Red Wings goaltenders Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard was good enough for the club to make the playoffs, suggesting GM Ken Holland might have to consider making a move in goal.

Morrison notes Holland will remain patient with his duo and give them time to improve, but there’s a growing chorus of speculation over the state of the Wings goaltending.

If Holland does opt to make a move it’s believed he’ll turn his focus toward Islanders goalie Martin Biron, who’s carrying an affordable $1.4 million salary this season. The Wings could demote Howard to free up space for Biron’s salary.

Other clubs, however, might also have interest in Biron. The Edmonton Journal suggested Sunday the Buffalo Sabres – one of Biron’s former teams – might be interested in bringing him back as coach Lindy Ruff lacks confidence in current backup Patrick Lalime.

Holland – or any other GM interested in Biron – will have to wait a while. The Islanders are still awaiting the return of starter Rick DiPietro from off-season surgery and until he’s back in action on a regular basis Biron won’t be going anywhere.

• Internet rumors suggest Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala is an option for the Red Wings, but given his poor performance thus far the notion of him going to the Wings or any other NHL team is laughable.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun summed up Toskala’s situation nicely in his recent Sunday column, writing the only hope the Leafs have of moving the struggling Finn before the trade deadline would be to demote him and then place him on recall waivers - and even then it’s a long shot a rival club would pick him up.

• Philadelphia Flyers oft-injured forward Simon Gagne has been shelved again – this time by two small hernias – and there’s rumor-mill chatter GM Paul Holmgren could look at bringing in some short-term scoring depth.

It remains to be seen what moves – if any – Holmgren has in mind, but he has no interest in signing unrestricted free agent winger Brendan Shanahan.

That brings the number of teams reportedly not interested in Shanahan to three – Boston and Toronto being the others – which would significantly narrow the field of potential destinations for the seven-time 40-goal scorer, who apparently would prefer to play close to his family in New York City.

• The Washington Post reported Capitals center Michael Nylander played his final game with the American League’s Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday, noting his two-week conditioning period ends Tuesday.

Now Nylander and Capitals management will wait to see if his six-point performance in five farm league games will attract interest from any NHL or Kontinental League teams.

Given his salary cap hit ($4.9 million per season through next year) and no-movement clause, Nylander is more likely to be playing in the KHL than to be playing for another NHL club this season.

I think it unlikely that Osgood will be anywhere else as an active player. The only way they'll consider moving him is if his numbers crashed so severely that they fear for the season, and at that point he'll be untradeable. I like the idea of Biron being in Buffalo. Lindy Ruff knows how to motivate players, and he brought out the best in Biron in past. Makes for a good, competitive game, having players ready to win, which is why the magic tandem of Big Mouth and Sourpuss in Toronto (G.M. and Coach, respectively) especially painful to behold. It's hard to feel bad for the wealthy, but you gotta feel for a hockey fan like Wang... Di Pietero, Yashin... Keep the current roster, look at the coach, but dump the front office. But don't let it be Gretzky who goes there. keep him clear and free for when MLS decides to take the salary hit on Burke.

IT SEEMS AS THOUGH some folks forget that when VESA TOSKALA was a standout goalie for the SHARKS, it was also a fact that he had a decent team in front of him. Now that CAN'T be said about the MAPLE LEAFS, at least for the time being, but if I were a gambler, I would still say that this style of losing is only gonna last for so long until THE DOUBLE B blows his spout. When that happens, watch out folks, cause "HE'S A FURLEY DANGEROUS MAN." Once again, I point out what I've been knawing at for the past several seasons that the NHL needs to rid itself of the DAMN EUROPEAN TIDDLY WINKERS that plague our sport, given the version that we play in North America. CALM DOWN, OPPONENTS; I'm saying keep the OVECHKINS, MALKINS, AND THE FEW OTHERS WHO ARE QUALIFED TO PLAY IN THIS LEAGUE. But the NO NAME little RINK RATS like the SEDINS should be ousted and sent back to the overseas factory !!! And once again, last nights game prooves it even further. Anybody see what SEDIN was doing during the line brawl between the CANUCKS and the RANGERS ??? Answer: Standing around as though he should have had to purchase a ticket for the game, as opposed to playing in it !!! WHAT A STINKIN SCUMBAG !!!

The Red Wings will make the playoffs and that is all they care about. In the playoffs, Osgood turns it up like nobody else can. Why would the Wings look to make a trade for a mediocre backup goalie for the playoffs? Osgood is inconsistant during the regular season but is a proven star in the cup chase. Motoxxx is right about Howard. He would never clear waivers going back down to the AHL. Add in the cap issues and losing a prospect and you can see that there will be no trade for a goalie.

The Wings can't "demote" Howard. That's the whole reason he's up here in the first place! To go back down he'd have to clear waivers. Spare me the "he sucks and wouldn't clear" crap that I know I'll get. He's not great but he's good enough to get picked up. If he could have been sent down for another year the Wings would still have Conklin as the backup. After Hudler and Samuellson left the cap space was there to keep Conklin. Howard couldn't go back down so the brass made a decision and said it's time for him to prove himself. He's failing. He won't be here next year and Biron won't be here this year. Simple as that.

Sorry forgot to add. DiPietro? Is he still in the NHL? This guy will be another Yashin for the Icelanders!

How did Nylander fall so far off every NHL clubs radar? Underachievement or a locker room problem? No one is interested? I understand his salary hit of $4.9 Million is hugh, but he does produce.
