Glen Hanlon steps down as coach of Belarus national team

Former Washington Capitals coach Glen Hanlon has resigned as head coach of the Belarus national squad.

Hanlon, who was dismissed as coach of Dynamo Minsk after a loss Oct. 20, decided to step down as the Belarussian national team coach Monday morning, less than four months before the Olympics in Vancouver.

“Today I resigned as the head coach of the national team of Belarus,” Hanlon wrote in an email to THN.com Monday morning. “They have been very good to me here and I wish them all the best in Vancouver.”

Hanlon was coach of the national team in Belarus at the World Championship in 2005, 2006 and 2009. In 2006, Belarus was sixth at the worlds, which is the country’s best result in an international tournament.

Hanlon was named coach of the year in Belarus in 2006 and 2009.
