Wayne Gretzky deserved a better fate than was handed to him in Phoenix.
If it wasn't for Wayne's efforts both on and off the ice, there wouldn't be NHL hockey in the western United States. Gretzky first saved hockey in St. Louis in the late 1980s and then basically put hockey on the map in California. Gretzky single-handedly kept Los Angeles, San Jose and St. Louis in the NHL.
Gretzky is and was the lone reason there’s still hockey in Phoenix at all. Period.
