Maybe a strong finish is worth something after all.

In the final third of every NHL season, some team previously thought to be completely out of the playoff chase suddenly starts playing .600 hockey, only to inevitably fall just shy of a post-season berth.

Usually it’s Florida. Last year, it was Ottawa. And Florida.

Typically the late-season surge does nothing but create unrealistic expectations for the following year. The Sens, however, are off to a nice start, sitting atop a Northeast Division that’s going to be extremely weak if Boston doesn’t get it together soon.

Pascal Leclaire has done the job in goal, captain Daniel Alfredsson is leading the way with three goals and nine points in seven games and the team is killing 93.1 percent of the penalties it’s assessed, good for the second-best mark in the league.

The Sens still need more production from top center Jason Spezza, but at least the entire team isn’t procrastinating this time around.

I would hope next week the oilers are alot higher on the list, seeing that they are leading the league in Goals per game average now(oct 23)and before(oct 19) when this list was made.

Well now... let's look at those rankings again. Hmmm.... Red Wings go down in flames at the hands of the Coyotes? Say it isn't so! And you think the Coyotes aren't real? Seems to me you got it all wrong... they are much more than a 12th ranked team. Time to rethink the Coyotes!

I agree with waiter4u2, and I don't even like the Coyotes. For what they're up against and all the distractions with management and ownership, they're kicking some ass so far.

Are you kidding me? The Coyotes are 12th? So what about that shutout of the the defending Stanley Cup champions? Or the shutout of the San Jose Sharks? Or the beating the Bruins took last Saturday? How about the goals against? I guess you haven't taken that into account. Take a look and the amount of shots on goal other teams have made against the Yotes. According to everyone else the Coyotes are ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th. I'm thinking your calculations are skewed! You'll think again when the Coyotes spank the Red Wings next Thursday!
