Gretzky could have done more

Ed Nyberg, Glendale, Ariz.

I have been a Phoenix Coyotes season-ticket holder since they moved here, but I’ve been a hockey fan for a lot longer.

The recent article by Adam Proteau on poor Wayne Gretzky deserves a response.

I understand Wayne is royalty to Canadians and any criticism will be vigorously defended, but let me point out a few things. Good players do not always make good coaches. Look at the coach who has won the past 10 Stanley Cups; no real player superstars there.

Anyone other than Wayne would never have lasted four seasons as a coach. They would have been fired based on the pathetic record Phoenix posted. Each time things got a little tough Wayne took a walk, just as he did this past summer.

When his team needed him the most he was nowhere to be found. We could have used a real public cheerleader to get in the trenches and support the team and its fans. However, Wayne was worried about his image and payments due as evidenced by his filings as an unsecured creditor in the bankruptcy case.

I agree Wayne was a very gifted player, but sorry Adam, leadership behind the bench - not so much. The Phoenix Coyotes are struggling and need to win to draw fans back. For the good of the NHL let's all hope they succeed.
