Mats Sundin to decide on NHL future shortly after weekend wedding

Mats Sundin is prepared to say “I do,” to Josephine Johansson this weekend and his agent says it won’t be long before Sundin says either “I do,” or “I don’t” to extending his NHL career for another season.

Amid speculation that Sundin has played his last NHL game, Sundin’s agent J.P. Barry, who is in Stockholm for Sundin’s wedding this Saturday, said he expects his client to make up his mind in short order after his wedding. Certainly, it won’t be the half-season soap opera we saw last season when Sundin was waffling over his hockey future before signing with the Vancouver Canucks.

“I think he’s going to talk to me next week, after all this is over,” Barry said. “I’ll get a clear picture pretty quickly. He’s not going to wait as long (as last year) or anything like that. This is an important event for him and then he’s going to make some decisions after this.”

Barry said he wasn’t sure whether Sundin would be available for training camps that begin in mid-September, but said Sundin has kept in shape and continued to train through the summer.

But where would he play? Barry said Sundin enjoyed his time with the Vancouver Canucks last season, but the Canucks appear to have moved on, leading many to speculate that Sundin has made it clear he doesn’t intend on coming back to play in the NHL. With big raises to the Sedin twins and having signed Mikael Samuelsson over the summer, the Canucks have just less than $1 million of salary cap room for this season.

The smart money is on Sundin announcing his retirement at some point soon.

As a Canucks fan, count me in as one who's not only had enough of Sundin, but of all these older players who are unable to make a decision about retirement and then finally decide towards the middle of the season that they want to play again.

going to canucks.......gillis has a hard for this guy for some reason ......maybe he won't offer him 10 mil this time around but ........wouldn't be surprised to see them trade for heatley too like a kesler erhoff raymond type package ...i include kesler because don't think that they can sign him and luongo long term after Keslers selke nomination and would give hodgson 1 more year to develop for next year when sundin is gone........ not saying this will happen but you don't get three defencemen in one day without something else brewing on the trade front

Ya thats right. Who cares. I think that he proved that he lost it in Vancouver and expecially in the playoffs (of which he always stunk at). He was never a player that the rest of the team could jump on his back. A good regular season guy but when the chips were down--fold up like a cheap suit. Anyhow, I am now an official anti-advocate of the Leafs so----who cares.

Sundin still has gas in the tank, for the right price...say if Burke could talk him down to no more than 3 million. I think the Leafs are the only place he could land, barring some bonehead maneuver by an incompetent GM.

I can not stand J.P Barry. I would love to see the position Sundin held, go to somebody who actually WANTS to play hockey. Perhaps one of the Nucks new youngsters.

Well at the very least , we in B.C. wont have to deal with this old washed up man anymore. Thanks Matts for showing us what a lot of money spent on past accomplishments can get us now a days. ( unlike the cool Mark Messier ) Maybe we could give that 1 million to claude Lemieux or Theo Fleury.
