The Hockey News' AHL Jersey Rankings

Zoom Image

They call it the ‘second-best hockey league in the world,’ but the American League certainly won’t settle for that title when it comes to our ultimate jersey showdown. Whether it’s completely original looks or jerseys designed to pay homage to a team’s NHL parent franchise, the AHL has a history nearly as long and illustrious as the big circuit.

While logos (last year’s competition) are certainly a big part of the hockey jersey, we also considered shoulder patches, striping and piping – so teams gained and lost points based on those factors. You'll also notice both home and away jerseys are used to represent the teams. Simply put, we took the one we liked best out of the two. Third or alternate jersey weren't considered, nor were the new duds for Abbotsford and Texas, who haven't released their sweaters yet.

For the AHL, jerseys we thought leaned too heavily on NHL sweaters were dropped to the middle – they looked good, but we know why.

With all that in play, here are the rankings. Click on each thumbnail for a larger picture.

And once you've taken in our top 27, head over to the voting page to select your favorite from our top 10 and help it to move on in the Jersey Tournament that will follow the rankings of each league’s jerseys (find the rankings and tournament schedule on The Hockey News Jersey Rankings and Tournament Central page).

the problem i have with these ranking is that they display only one of the jerseys. how do they decide which to choose? why not display all the jeseys that a team has instead of choosing one. im a big hershey fan so i like theirs. i also like manshester bridgeport and erie. i wish adirondack would have kept in more purple for the phantoms. i think it adds a little more life to the jerseys.

WELL, I WAS MILDLY SURPRIZED that I read some comments which reflected on AHL fans out there who were and are active in the collectorship of those sweaters. Now let's see if youz guyz can get your wives to approve of you putting each sweater in a glass enclosed picture frame and hanging each on the walls of your homes in the various rooms and the hallways to boot ??? I'll start the ball rolling by saying we've got 22 on these walls thus far, but many belong to the CHL teams in the WHL, OHL, and QHL. And in regard to the article, I thought for sure that the CHICAGO WOLVES would be a solid #1, and I'm fried that THN ranked them only #10. Something tells me that if the rankers actually saw that mascot WOLF go through his antics at the WOLVES home games, especially the fire induced game introductions and the BLACK BETTY theme dance, that they would rank the sweater higher on that merit alone.

I was wondering what they were going to call the Phantoms now that they are not in Philadelphia. I hope they do well in Glens Falls and that the AHL goes back there for good. I used to love following the Adirondack Red Wings.

http://twitpic.com/4pxcu That's from the Flyers official Twitter site. It's the Phantoms new jerseys. Their primary colors are orange and black now. There is only a tiny bit of purple that you can barely see. Their socks are also new. They definitely changed their color scheme

rttj399 what are you basing your information on. The Adirondack Phantoms haven't played their inagural season yet but if you visit their website the colour scheme looks the same as the jersey THN displayed. http://www.phantomshockey.com/

I hate it when minor league team jerseys look almost like the NHL affiliates. It winds up looking like a cheap bootleg knockoff. If your a fan, why would you buy the minor leauge jersey when they look so close to the NHL? I would just by the NHL. I dont like the #1 choice (admirals) it reminds me of Jim Carrey as Fire Marshall Bill on Living Colour. The River Rats are actually way cooler than THN gives them credit. All and all I dont much care for most of the AHL designs overall. I like the ECHL and NHL better.

As a collector I love the AHL's jerseys. Especially Peoria's and Milwaukee's. (Also San Antonio, Wilkes-Barre Scranton, Manitobe, Worcester and Rochester). I see alot of AHL games each season and one thing bothers me about the Falcons and Monarchs jersey. THe horizontal stripe at the bottom should go all the way around the jersey. Cutting off in the front and back the way they do makes the players appear to be wearing fanny packs and aprons out on the ice. Please guys either make em go all the way around or remove the darn things.
