NHL's New York Rangers sign F Ales Kotalik to a three-year, US$9-million deal

NEW YORK - The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with forward Ales Kotalik on a three-year, US$9-million deal.

Kotalik had 20 goals and 43 points in 75 games with the Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers last season, the fourth time in six seasons he reached the 20-goal mark.

The right winger shares the NHL career record with Slava Kozlov by scoring 11 deciding shootout goals. Kotalik has connected 20 times in 38 career shootout attempts.

In 445 regular-season NHL games, Kotalik has 121 goals and 130 assists.

Last season, Kotalik led the NHL with five deciding goals in shootouts and scored eight times overall in the tiebreaker. He was traded by Buffalo to Edmonton at the March 4 deadline.

This is another example of the Rangers signing someone who has the potential, but only shows up when he wants to. I see him in the same mold as Nik Zherdev who disappeared down the stretch. I see Kotalik starting off on a hot streak, but as the season wears on, I just have that feeling that he will do a disappearing act, and he is an early-season favorite to be a favorite whipping boy of the Garden faithful.

I can't wait for the season to start so we can hear the Stranger fans to begin their complaints about this guy being soft and not going hard to the corner, maybe if he had here he wouldn't have been sent to the Drips at the end of the season. No grit, but he has a great shot and does well in the shootout, bottom line, Slats overpays another winger.
