Free agency has been a fun ride so far, but sometimes you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone. Sometimes it’s the player who doesn’t re-sign who has one of the biggest impacts on the team he leaves, which may explain why Carolina GM Jim Rutherford rarely lets any of his charges out of the family.

But there has been attrition this summer already, so here’s a look at some players who may be missed by more than just the fans who bought their jerseys last year.

Greg Zanon, D –
Formerly of Nashville, now a member of the Minnesota Wild. Zanon is one of those quietly effective players who may not be known by fans outside his market, but is definitely known by fellow NHLers. Zanon’s 237 blocked shots will be missed in Nashville, as will his overall physical and responsible play. It’s too easy to make fun of the “new” Minnesota brain trust for upgrading on defense ahead of offense, but you can’t knock the team for bringing Zanon in.

Nikolai Khabibulin, G –
Once a Blackhawk, now an Oiler. On paper, Chicago is a Stanley Cup contender this year, except in one glaring category: goaltending. Cristobal Huet is officially the go-to guy finally, but that’s not necessarily the best news for Hawks fans. The 33-year-old French national has still yet to win a playoff series and he’ll definitely be expected to do so next summer. Khabibulin may have a lot of miles on the odometer, but he makes the Oilers better and the Hawks look a little sketchy come April.

Ian Laperriere, RW –
Ex-member of the Avalanche joins the Flyers. Colorado hasn’t made a lot of popular moves lately and letting ‘Lappy’ walk out the door has to be near the top of the list. A great character guy who stuck up for teammates and played hard, Laperriere will be loved by Flyers fans. And if new Avs GM Greg Sherman thinks David Koci is Laperriere’s replacement simply because Koci fights, he’s got a long way to go as an NHL exec.

Hal Gill, D –
Used to be in Pittsburgh, heading to Montreal. Considering the Penguins just won the Stanley Cup, it’s natural to expect some losses from the ranks and so far GM Ray Shero has done pretty well in keeping the team together. But Gill was an excellent penalty-killer thanks to his albatross-like reach. Not only that, but his 6-foot-7 frame discouraged opponents from taking too many liberties with the Pens’ skill players, even if Gill isn’t known for his snarl. Whether he thrives in Montreal remains to be seen, but Gill will be missed in Pittsburgh.

Kyle Quincey, D –
Briefly a King, now heads to the Avalanche. Quincey was actually dealt by Los Angeles to Colorado as part of the Ryan Smyth trade, along with Tom Preissing. To me, this deal was incredibly strange if you’re a Kings fan. Quincey was a revelation for L.A. last season, putting in major minutes on a young blueline and proving he was basically a victim of depth in Detroit. With Quincey and Preissing gone, the Kings have an even greener defense corps than they did last season (even with the addition of Rob Scuderi), which is almost impressive in that it seems impossible. As he did in L.A., Quincey will quickly prove in Colorado that his former team gave up on him too soon.

I think it's pretty funny that in the same article that it's suggested that the Pens will miss Hal Gill (who should be called for interference every time he steps on the ice), Rob Scuderri isn't listed as a UFA who will be missed by the same team. If the Pens didn't have Gill, maybe nothing was different last year, but if they didn't have Scuderri, the Wings most likely are the Cup champs. Scuderri absolutely robbed Johan Franzen twice in game 6, and two goals by him in that game would have been enough to finish the series. The Pens will misss Scuderri more than they will miss Gill.

Texas_ranger: I don't think anyone is trying to say Gill hasn't been a huge liability for most of his career, or that the odds of him suceeding in Montreal aren't slim (they are- I agree with you, he'll be booed out of town by Christmas). My point is that given the right role, system, and coach, Gill can be an effective contributor to a solid team's defense. On either a weak team or for a coach who expects him to do too much, he is a train wreck. Keeping him as a number five defender, limited to about 15 minutes a night against the opposition's second or third line, and working the penalty kill (where minimal skating is required) allows him to utilize the attributes he does have. Is he going to help Montreal anymore than he helped Toronto or Boston? No. Did he help the Penguins with their defensive depth over the past couple years? Yes.

How come every time I mention what a liability Hal Gill is, Pens fans crawl out of the woodwork to disagree with me, yet scubasteve does the same thing and he gets no flak for it? Should I change my nickname to Frankenstein? By Christmas Hal Gill will be asking Santa Claus for a trade to Phoenix just to get away from angry Habs fans.

I'm Guessing by having Quincey on this list, you do not watch many Kings games, or follow them for that matter. He was not a UFA and should not even be on your UFA list. He was not given up on. With the boatloads of defensive talent that LA has he just became expandable. LA would do this trade over and over again, laughing harder everytime they signed the papers to finalize it. Try watching a LA game this year, They are fun to watch and Smyth will make them that much better.

The pens will only miss Hal Gill's amazing ability to not get called for his interference everytime an impossing player enters his teams defensive zone. I agree that Chicago will miss Khabby though has I've never been sold on Huet and if he gets injured the team will be in rough shape. However I disagree with you that teams have given up on Quincey. As a Wings fan I was very sad to see him go after he played very well in the 07 playoffs. I rather have seen Meech gone but his ability to play both defence and wing is why holland choose to let Quincey go instead (Meech did end up playing the majority of his games on the wing) but by no means did they give up on him. There was just no room. L.A did not give up on him either. They traded him yes but thats not giving up, they wanted an experienced winger to come in and Quincey happened to the price for one. I am very glad to see you did not include Hossa on this list as people seem to forget that the Wings the won the cup last year only lost Dallas Drake and Hasek and were not even thinking about replacing Drake with a top forward but Hossa offered them a deal they couldn't refused. The teams no worse off now than they were when they won the cup, apart from the seasoning of Helm, Hudler (if they keep him), Filps, Abdelkader, Leino, and Ericsson.
