MONTREAL – There are trades made for hockey reasons and trades made for financial ones and the Chris Pronger deal represented both sides of the equation.

The Philadelphia Flyers made an unequivocal hockey deal in getting Pronger on their blueline. There is little doubt they are better today than they were yesterday and much better than they were when Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin roamed the slot with impunity during the first round of the playoffs.

The Anaheim Ducks, on the other hand, made a deal based strictly on finances. With Scott Niedermayer committing to coming back to play for the Ducks next season, there simply wasn’t enough cap space or dollars to go around and dropping $6.25 million from their payroll represents a huge financial relief for the Ducks. They take back a total of $4.25 million in Joffrey Lupul – a staple in any trade involving Pronger – and promising young defenseman Luca Sbisa.

The view from this corner is that the Flyers are better today and the Ducks are worse. Down the road, though, you have to wonder whether the Flyers aren’t selling their souls for immediate gains because long-term, this deal could lead to financial disaster for a couple of reasons.

First, Pronger has just one year left on his deal and has made it clear he wants a long-term extension. In fact, since the Flyers will be able to negotiate with him on that beginning July 1, Pronger is essentially viewing that date as the beginning of his unrestricted free agency. You’d have to think Pronger will command somewhere in the range of at least $7 million a year on a multi-year deal.

That will be difficult enough for the Flyers to deal with, since they are only about $1.25 million under the salary cap for next season already. The Pronger deal has essentially forced the Flyers to say goodbye to a very useful and versatile offensive player in Mike Knuble, who becomes an unrestricted free agent next week.

Going into next season, the Flyers have a mind-boggling seven players whose cap hit is in excess of $5 million in Daniel Briere ($6.5 million), Kimmo Timonen ($6.3 million), Pronger ($6.25 million), Mike Richards ($5.75 million), Simon Gagne ($5.25 million) and Jeff Carter ($5 million).

High-priced talent such as that is well and good, as long as you have young and cheap players coming into your system and the Pronger deal is going to hamper that possibility in a big way. In dealing 2009 first-round Sbisa and their first-rounders in 2009 and 2010 – plus a third-rounder if they win the Stanley Cup next season – the Flyers have effectively dealt away the kind of assets with the potential to fill the holes in their lineup cheaply.

“It’s a lot to give up, absolutely,” said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. “Ask me a year from now or a couple of years from now if it’s worth it. Joffrey Lupul is a fine young man and a good player and Luca Sbisa is going to be a good player and, obviously the unknowns are the draft picks, but we’re trying to win here and we think Chris is a guy who can help us get closer to achieving our goal.”

And if the Flyers goal is to leave every elite opposing forward black and blue, they might just reach that one. Imagine driving to the Flyers net and having Pronger and goaltender Ray Emery standing in your way. Having a top three of Pronger, Timonen and Braydon Coburn will give the Flyers the kind of defense corps they need to go against East beasts such as Crosby, Malkin, Alex Ovechkin and Eric Staal.

“He brings a lot of things to any team he’s on,” Holmgren said of Pronger. “First of all, he’s a proven winner. Secondly, he brings the size and he can pass the puck as well as anybody. And he brings a nice physical presence, both in stature and the way he plays.”

The Flyers had better win with Pronger now because the way they’re constructed, they are looking very much like a team that could be headed straight toward salary cap disaster.

If winning the east means getting passed Pronger, then winning will have never been easier. The Flyers just made beating them easier then ever, they just gave Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby, Staal and the new kid, Tavaris even more power play time He was a good defenseman in the defensive west, but now he is going to look average in the offensively dominate east where he's going to be watching as they skilled guys fly by him. Emerey was a better pick up then this goof.

I think the Flyers won this trade and I am suprised to hear Flyer fans are not excited to get Pronger. Pronger is dominant in his own zone. He controls the pace and the flow of play in his end of the ice and gives his fowards the confidence and the freedom to focus on offense. That freedom will add to the Flyers offense as much as Lupul did last year. Pronger is a punishing hitter that will soon be the bane of all eastern conference goal scorers. His agressive play and penchant for intimidation will make him a fan favorite in Philly in no time. Sbisa is a great player that any team would want but he will never be as dominant or effective as Pronger. As an Islander fan I am not too happy about having to face a Pronger led Flyer team 7 times a season. The Flyers are a more dangerous team with Pronger and winning in the playoffs in the Eastern conference now means getting past Pronger.

The Flyers or should I rename them the Smiths and the Rangers as the Jones'. They are constantly giving away their talent for a quick fix-didn't the Rangers teach them anything?? Apparently not!! One person on a whim and hopefully agrees to a contract will stand to lose Knuble. The Flyers are getting their butts handed to them by the Pens in the playoffs for the past two years-thinking Pronger is their savior--not! With the players constantly looking over their respective shoulders-they can't do two things at once-play good hockey and worry about their jobs for a quick fix! Maybe, Knuble can become a Penguin and realize what it means to be on a "secure" team foe once and who knows show the Flyers his name on the next CUP....

I just can't believe that Joffrey Lupul makes 4.25 million per year. Someone had a real brain fart when they offered him that deal.

Yes, Flyer fans you gave up a lot for him -- as did we a while back -- but I bet in a year you'll have forgotten all about the price (if you are able to extend his contract). When you watch him every night you'll see that he is A LOT more disciplined than his reputation, opponent top lines won't seem as effective as they did the year before, he'll have a calming effect whenever your team needs a boost of stability, and you'll see his ability to clear the puck in difficult situations and make great long passes to start rushes. Yes, I am talking about Pronger and I miss him already!

I think this trade had more to do with Philly's immediate salary cap situation than people realize. The Flyers had Lupul at $4.25M per year thru 2013. They must be thrilled to be out of that. So the +/- cap hit of adding Pronger is $2M for next year and beyond. No getting around the fact that 3 first round prospects is a big price to pay....but I see the logic. They will definately be a better team next year.

LOL... Philly gave up way too much... 6.5 to boot. Prongoon gets to dance with Cindy and Milkdud next season.. Will be interesting to see what the league will do to protect their poster child. I'm sure it will be different, you can always count on Buttman to come thru. Say hello to the goontown squad Pitts! P.S. Watch you head. Pronger... I hope he gets in a few licks before his next suspension.

Hi DC. Very close to the wording you used on FMB. Since you're hung up on 1st round draft picks, Pronger was a #2 overall. Sbisa was a 19th, this years pick was 21 & the 2010 pick will likely be #30. Lupul is a talented but lazy player who has never played up to his capability while Pronger got 1 team to the SCF & the next year was skating with the Cup. I liked Sbisa but a proven winner trumps 3 maybes & a would be if he tried.

Dear Ed Snider, Fire Holmgren immediately! In 6 months he has traded three 1st round picks, Lupul, Upshall and a second rounder for an AHL player(Carcillo) and a 34 year old d-man. GM's must be ringing his phone off the hook just to see what assets he will throw at them for re-treads. The only upside is if you DON'T re-sign Pronger so that you can free up some cap-space in case the cap goes down next year. If that is the casethen he is the most expensive rental EVER. If they re-sign him they will be in salary cap hell forever. The only common thread here is that Homer threw way to much money at marginal players...hence the fire sale. I hope Chris realizes that the 2 game suspensions that he is used to getting will turn into 25 games when Campbell sees the colors on his sweater.

Is Pronger bringing Giguere with him? Very nice pickup for the flyers, but a very big price, and still a gaping hole where it matters most.
