LAS VEGAS - Canada might get in on the next Winter Classic.

The NHL is considering a New Year's Day doubleheader that would see a second game played at Calgary's McMahon Stadium in 2010, according to sources.

A final decision likely won't be made until next month. The competition committee will discuss the merits of a second game next Thursday during a meeting in Montreal and must provide a thumbs up for things to move forward.

There are also logistical issues to be sorted out.

The league purchased a state-of-the-art mobile ice making trailer last year but it would only be available at one venue. There is also a large crown in the field at McMahon Stadium that would provide a challenge to Dan Craig and his icemaking crew.

After just two seasons, the Winter Classic has turned into a major event for the NHL. The inaugural game was November 2003 when Edmonton hosted Montreal and was followed by Chicago and Detroit playing at Wrigley Field in January.

The CBC is eager to get a Canadian team in the game and suggested the doubleheader to the league. A game in Calgary would likely see the Flames host another Canadian team, possibly the Vancouver Canucks, according to one source.

The other game will feature the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park. While that hasn't been announced officially, it has long been rumoured.

Commissioner Gary Bettman was asked about that earlier this week.

"I'm not in a position to make any announcements right now," said Bettman. "I know there are a lot of rumours that are floating about. At least at this point in time, I'm going to leave them rumours."
