LAS VEGAS - A great season for the Boston Bruins has helped earn Claude Julien the Jack Adams Award.

He was named the NHL's coach of the year on Thursday after being selected over San Jose's Todd McLellan and Andy Murray of St. Louis in voting by NHL broadcasters. All three men were nominated for the first time.

Julien guided the Bruins to top spot in the Eastern Conference with 116 points - 22 more than they had the season before.

McLellan's Sharks won the Presidents' Trophy in his first season behind the bench. The team set an NHL record with a 25-3-2 start.

It was also a record-setting season for Murray's Blues, who engineered one of the greatest comebacks in league history by going 25-9-7 down the stretch to earn a playoff spot.

big_bad_bob: The main reason Bylsma didn't get it is because he only coached 25 regular season games. His 18-3-4 record was impressive, but since all the votes were in before the playoffs it wasn't enough time to see if it was just that teams were not used to playing against his style. Maybe next year, if he can coach the Pens to another very good year with less overall talent (face it, they will not be as talented next season due to cap issues) he'll get it.

Unfortunately its the kiss of death. Check the longevity of Jack Adams winners. Look for the B's to take a ride back down this year.

Congradulations to Claude Julien and Boston! Bruins needed something good to happen for a change. There is a part of me that tought Dan Bylsma should have at least been considered or possibly won the award. He turned the Pens boat around 180 degress as a rookie NHL coach! That is no small accomplishment.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
