Stanley Cup viewership ratings bounce back in Game 6 of series

TORONTO - Canadian hockey fans returned to their television sets to watch Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final, according to the CBC's ratings.

The sixth game of the best-of-seven series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday averaged 2.596 million, a figure substantially higher than 1.612 million viewers who witnessed Game 5 - the lowest-rated game of the series thus far.

Last year's Game 6 between the same teams netted a slightly higher 2.754 million, though last year's Game 6 was the deciding contest of the Stanley Cup final.

The first four games of the series also resulted in slight drops in viewership from last year's final.

South of the border, NBC said Wednesday that the ratings for Game 6 were down seven per cent from last year's Game 6, when the Red Wings clinched the title.

Unlike in 2008, this season's game went up against the NBA finals.
