Ottawa Senators forward Dany Heatley asking to be traded

Dany Heatley's tenure with the Ottawa Senators may be nearing an end.

Several media outlets reported Tuesday that Heatley has asked for a trade out of Ottawa, less than two years after signing a US$45-million, six-year deal with the Senators.

Heatley had an off-year by his standards, scoring 39 goals and adding 33 assists in 82 games last season. It's his lowest point total in four seasons with the Senators, after coming to Ottawa in a trade with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005.

The new contract may make Heatley difficult to trade, since he'll count for $7.5 million against a team's salary cap.

THE POSSIBILITY ALSO EXISTS THAT HEATLEY'S MOTIVATION FOR WANTING A TRADE IS NOT RELATED TO HIS NUMBERS. IT MIGHT VERY WELL BE THAT HE HAS A PERSONALITY CONFLICT WITH SOMEONE AND FEELS THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH IT IS TO MOVE ON.

STURMRUGER. MY ERROR REGARDING HULL. I JUST CHECKED AND HIS NUMBERS WITH DALLAS WEREN'T AS BAD AS I THOUGHT THEY WERE ALTHOUGH THEY WERE OFF BY 17 GOALS FROM HIS LAST THREE YEARS WITH ST. LOUIS. I HAD ALSO THOUGHT HE FINISHED AROUND 760 BUT WAS REALLY AT 741. SO IF HE'D PLAYED WITH A GOAL SCORING TEAM INSTEAD OF DALLAS HE'D HAVE PROBABLY FINISHED AROUND 760. I GUESS A CUP IS WORTH IS WORTH 17 GOALS.

loufontinato, Heatley played the first half of the season under Craig Hartsburg, who coached a defense-first system. Under this coach, Heatley went out of his way on several occasions to tell the media he wanted to become a more complete player. The team fires the defensive coach, brings in Clouston, who plays an offensive-pressure game, so this "protect your stats" excuse is garbage. I'm guessing wanted Heatley to stick to what he does best: get in position to fire one-timers, and Heatley felt insulted for being seen as one-dimensional. I just hope the Sens ship him off to Long Island for the #1 pick so they can draft Tavares. It has the dual effect of exiling Heatley to a perrennial loser, and giving Brian Burke the finger.

When a player is under contract and asks for a trade the GM better make sure that they get equal or greater value for this player. Good thing Ottawa doesn't have Kevin Lowe as a GM.(Pronger for Lupul and Smid) If Heatly wants out he can either play until a sutible trade is worked out or sit and not get paid. There has to be some sort of breach of contract there. Hockey is a team sport and this kind of selfishness has no place. The Brett Hull example is hogwash. If he did not adapt his game to be more defensive he never would have won cups. What did steve Yzerman do when asked to be more defensive? Ya he adapted his game and eventually won three stanley cups. Players that think like heatly will never be on a championship team because they worry to much about thier personal stats. I would rather have a gifted two way forward than a guy who is one dimensional.

IF HEATLEY'S NUMBERS ARE DOWN BECAUSE OF A DEFENSE FIRST COACHES PHILOSOPHY THEN HE'S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT TO GET AWAY AS FAST AS HE CAN. IN HOCKEY IT'S ALL ABOUT NUMBERS. WHEN IT COMES TO NEGOTIATING A CONTRACT, GETTING FAVOURABLE PRESS, GETTING ENDORSEMENT CONTRACTS, ACCOMPLISHING PERSONAL MILESTONES, OR GETTING INTO THE HALL OF FAME, IT'S ALL ABOUT NUMBERS. BRETT HULL REALLY HURT HIMSELF BY WASTING ALL THAT VALUABLE TIME PLAYING FOR KEN HITCHCOCK. IF HE'D PLAYED ON A GOAL SCORING TEAM INSTEAD OF DALLAS'S DEFENSIVE ORIENTED TEAM THEN HE'D HAVE PROBABLY TOPPED 800 GOALS FOR HIS CAREER. NEVER WASTE YOUR TIME PLAYING IN A BAD SITUATION. MOVE ON WITH ALL HASTE.

i said this earlier, but for some reason THN got rid of their original headline and replaced it with this new page. anyway, the gist of it was that the senators should trade heatley to chicago for brian campbell and jack skille. chicago will take on 0.4 million in salary, but for a far superior player. this would allow the 'hawks to then NOT resign havlat, allowing him to walk as an UFA, which would then free them from some of their upcoming salary problems. campbell is getting lost in the depth of chicago's amazing and young defensive talent, while skille seems a far way from cracking their lineup... a change of scenary would definitely help restore this kid's potential and promise. plus, campbell isn't THAT bad (actually, he's terrible), but that just means that he'd fit in well on ottawa's back end.

what's most stunning about this is that, you look at other guys who ask for a trade or make it known they'll leave when their contract is up, and those guys are generally looked upon as whiners, primadonnas, selfish, etc...You like at a guy like Bouwmeester, who has suffered through his entire career without playing a single playoff game. Marian Gaborik, an offensive wizard, stuck playing on a defense-first team for his entire career. Or Joe Corvo, the last guy to ask Murray for a one-way ticket out of town, did so because he couldn't handle the pressure and scrutiny of playing in Canada. Heatley played 3 good seasons in Ottawa, put up his best numbers there, went to the Cup Final, and liked it enough to sign a 6-year deal. He plays half a season under a coach he apparently doesnt like, and wants out. Half a season is hardly a long enough time to figure out if your differences with the coach are irreconcileable.

How far West are you willing to go, Danny boy? Perhaps Murray can arrange a deal with Medvedev to ship you over to the KHL. It's all up-side, you'll be about as far West as you can go, and that 7.5M will be tax free!!

I can see him going to Anaheim or Edmonton. I highly doubt LA would give #5 for him as good players on entry level is how you keep the cap hits under control. They'd likely offer Johnson (thinks he's worth 5.5) & a player about to become RFA next year in return.
