DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings were pushed to the brink of elimination on home ice by the Anaheim Ducks.

Dan Cleary came through, though, scoring a tiebreaking goal with three minutes left that lifted Detroit to a 4-3 win on Thursday night that sent the defending Stanley Cup champions to the Western Conference finals for the third straight year.

"Most teams that have won the Stanley Cup don't even get here," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "For us to be in this situation is a real positive, but we have a hungry Chicago team waiting for us."

Detroit will host the Blackhawks in Game 1 on Sunday, matching up the Original Six teams in the playoffs for the first time since the conference finals in 1995.

"It should be fun," Babcock said.

Before Detroit did it, Colorado was the most recent NHL team to reach the conference finals after hoisting the Cup. The Avalanche lost to Detroit 7-0 in the deciding game in 2002.

The previous two Cup champions met for the third time since the NHL expanded in 1967, and all three series went the distance. The Edmonton Oilers needed overtime to get past Calgary in 1991, and Montreal beat Boston by two goals in 1971.

Unlike those winners, second-seeded Detroit was at home against eighth-seeded Anaheim, which knocked off the top-seeded San Jose Sharks in the first round.

Five of the games were decided by a goal, including Game 2 in triple overtime.

"It was the best series I've been in," Babcock said.

Anaheim's Jonas Hiller had a lot to do with the competitiveness, making 36 saves in the finale.

"What made this series so hard and what people don't understand, the people that have won know what it takes to win," Babcock said. "That's what made them so hard to get rid of."

Chris Osgood stopped 24 shots for the Red Wings, who couldn't protect a two-goal lead in the second period.

"It was a tough series, probably one of the toughest we've played in a long time," Osgood said.

Detroit's Jiri Hudler, Darren Helm and Mikael Samuelsson scored.

Cleary set up a matchup with his former team by scoring the winning goal, stuffing the puck past Hiller after Henrik Zetterberg flipped it into the crease.

"Z was in the corner and made a good play, put it on net," Cleary said. "I stayed with it and got it under Hiller."

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle wasn't sure the goal should have been allowed, but didn't complain much about it.

"When (Hiller) went down, Cleary pushed his pads," Carlyle said. "It's moot at this point."

The Ducks, though, showed a lot of resolve to make Game 7 necessary and to give Detroit all it could handle.

"When you're that close with so few minutes left, it's tough to lose," Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer said.

Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry cut into deficits, and Bobby Ryan made it 3-3 at 7:37 of the third.

The game ended in thrilling fashion after it appeared the Red Wings might win in a rout. Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf was called for two penalties in the first period and Detroit took advantage of the second.

Anaheim failed on an extended 5-on-3 power play in the first period when the game was scoreless.

"That was huge to keep us in the game and not give them any momentum," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead 1:17 into the second period.

Selanne committed a turnover in Detroit's end, Helm got to the loose puck and scored on a breakaway.

Selanne left the ice late in the second after Brad Stuart's hit, which drew a penalty and cut Selanne's nose. He returned and started an offensive outburst with a goal off a rebound in what was the first of three scores in 2 1/2 minutes.

Samuelsson and Perry also scored off a rebound late in the second period, and Detroit went into the third with a 3-2 lead.

"The series was 3-3 but, in my opinion, we outplayed them in every game and their goalie stood on his head," Babcock said.

Notes: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman attended the game and said the league didn't just become intriguing when three of the conference semifinal series were decided in a Game 7. "This entire season - the regular season, the first round of the playoffs and second round - have been incredibly competitive, exciting and entertaining," Bettman said. "That's something we have strived for and built toward since coming out of work stoppage with a new economic system, changing the rules, and officiating standards." ... Detroit has won three of five series against Anaheim. ... The Red Wings have advanced to at least the conference finals eight times in the last 14 seasons, winning the Cup in 1997, '98, 2002 and '08.

To my Duck fan friends out there. I want to say congrats on the great season and the great playoff run. I had you guys out back in Feb. A lot of determination by your team. And it seems like it can for the most part return in pretty much the same form next year. The Ducks will definitely be a team to beat next year. As for you fans, your all a bunch of classy folks and good hockey fans. I think we all had our gripes about the games that we watched, but for the most part kept it civil. We should all, as money paying hockey fans, have issues with the officiating in the playoffs this year. While the games in almost all the series were great to watch, like epic battles, The refs and the upper management in the league couldn't seem to make a decent call to save their jobs. Even the TV airings were a joke. They blocked out my Center Ice, What's that about?... Anyway, I hope that you can now join us decent Wings fans in our quest for another cup. I know it doesn't seem plausible, but I have always believed that if a team beats my team they should have me rooting for them to win. After all, they were good enough to beat my team, so they have earned my support. I can't tell you how many times I had to don my Avalanche jerseys and wear them about town. But I am a man of principle. I would be wearing my #44 Ducks jersey if the Ducks would have won. Anyway, best to all of you.....And Monkee, Congrats to you. Sorry about the bad timing. Looks like a shutdown D-Man to me. Should be ready to play just about the time Doughty is stepping out. I'll see if I can get a Hudler jersey for him, it would probably fit in a week. Best to ya.

It's settled then, a mini Pronger cyber jersey (sweater) is on its way ... enjoy! By the way, sort of thought Perry would be the least wanted of the killer Ps. He's actually the grittier of the bunch day-in-day-out in my opinion and I'm not sure he is a big King fan. Pronger hasn't played like that mean Pronger guy for some time, but it's fun to hear the boos. A 3-year old and a newborn ... good luck getting sleep anytime soon!

Robr & JM, Well he will certainly be head budding with his older Bro who turns 3 next week. As for the Pronger no thanks, I'll take Parros or Perry. two fisty players and one of them being a KINGS sort a say!!! I took my 3 year old to get his hair cut with him in Jan. Wearing a KINGS SHIRT. But hey if he does like the KINGS OR DUCKS or any other team I'll still love him as long as were not head to head but after the game i will go back to loving him again. LOL!!!

Thanks Monkee and CONGRATULATIONS! Where do I send the mini Pronger, Parros, or Perry jersey? We both know that your new baby is going to grow into a Duck fan just to spite you, right? That's just how it goes sometimes. Anyway check out the prime ticket replay because the game itself was pretty entertaining (except for the darn outcome of course). Here's to the Kings great young talent making the playoffs next year (right behind the Ducks of course).

The Wings got a bad break on a goal this series and so did the Ducks. All this sloppy officiating equals out. Teemu Selanne is still a gamer... wow!

Well first off I did not get to watch this game for I was Welcoming the next KINGS fan into this world last night. As for the Ducks fans mainly the two homies who wear the Black and Orange PROUDLY & know Good Sportsmanship. (Robr Ducky & JMurray)(oh yeah almost forgot my mom and my sons godmother who are huge DUCK fans) Keep your heads up. I know Anahiem will be a force to deal with next season again. As a Kings fan I am ecstatic they are out. as a hockey fan I am sad I didn't get to see the finals i wanted. As an Impartial Viewer. This was on hell of a SERIES. this is by far one of the best I have seen in years. Now to the Wings fans. Congratulations on a Big BIG win last night. also before I go I'd like to say the Ducks are no dirtier than the other 29 teams in the league. The only difference is that they are a much more physical team than most in the NHL these days. I only hope to see my beloved KINGS like either the as Physically talented team in the NHL for years to come.

Congats to the wings for thier series win. This series was the best one so far. The ducks played a tough series(the best eighth place seed in some time)It's good too see that the commenters here actually know hockey and are respectful.Even though I am Wings fan I love the style that the talented ducks play, it's kind of throw back to the old days. The Hawks wings should be one hell of a series.Wings in 6!!

Ok , first i want to give the Wings and there fans props , the Ducks did there best to stem the tide of talent form the Wings but just fell a bit short , so Congrats again and i cant wait for the Hawks & Wings Series , i say Wings in 6 . Now here is my gripe , i am not going to sit here and read about how the Ducks are a dirty team and needed to be ousted to better the rep of the NHL moving forward in the playoffs , Go Duck your self bobnocal , let me take the time to in-lighten you BOB! the Ducks are not going anywere , you called them untalented , unwatchable , cheap and dirty your either blind a idiot or both , well guess what , we have 3 big boys in Ryan , Perry and Getz who are only going to get bigger stronger and better we have Pronger and Hiller both locked up for another season , and our management in Bob Murray made moves to free up cap space and signed players that will make sure that the Ducks a serious Stanley Cup contending team for seasons to come , with the Ducks you are looking at one of the power houses in the NHL , minus all of the stupid comments about there name , past ownership and location. Get use to it there BOB! your going to get a eye full of this team for seasons to come , and since you have NoCal at the start of your ID , i suggest you come on down to So cal and come watch a game before you go making stupid posts about a team you have proably only seen on TV . If you want to continue to make stupid posts about a team that took out the number #1 seed and gave the #2 seed a run for there money , just know that i am here lurking in the wings ( No pun ment ) and congrats to the Canes for finishing of the Bruins . Peace out!
