Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski removed on stretcher after hit

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski left the ice on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital after being struck in the head by Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom's elbow.

A statement from the Ducks said Wisniewski was diagnosed with a lung contusion and would remain at the hospital until Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

Wisniewski had been defending in front of the Anaheim net when Holmstrom skated by and delivered the elbow shot with 6:11 to play in the second period of Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal Tuesday night. Seconds earlier, Wisniewski was hit by a slap shot in the rib area.

When play stopped, Wisniewski remained on the ice on his hands and knees. After several minutes he was helped onto a stretcher. He was then taken to UC Irvine Medical Center.

The Ducks were leading 2-0 when Wisniewski was hurt.
