The Hockey News’ player of the week for April 27 to May 3, 2009 is Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf.
Getzlaf had a stellar week with two goals and seven points in three games, leading his team to an upset series-win over the West’s No. 1 seed San Jose and a split on the road with No. 2 seed Detroit during the first two games of Round 2.
In the deciding game versus the Sharks, Getzlaf had a goal, two points was plus-1 and set the tone for the game with a fight against Joe Thornton two seconds into the match. In Game 1 against Detroit, the 6-foot-4, 221-pound power forward had two assists and played 27:55, nearly half the game; that’s No. 1-defenseman numbers.
In Game 2, a triple-overtime affair, the 23-year-old played an amazing 38:59 while tallying a goal and three points as the Ducks’ tied the series heading back to Anaheim for Game 3.
