The Hockey News’ player of the week for April 13-20, 2009 is Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin.
After leading the NHL in scoring throughout the regular season, the Russian sharpshooter is the points-leader in the playoffs, tallying four goals and three assists in his last three contests.
In Game 2 against the Philadelphia Flyers, Malkin scored the tying goal for the Penguins and he and Sergei Gonchar set up Bill Guerin to blast the game-winning wrist shot by Flyers goaltender Martin Biron.
And while Game 3 didn’t have the same outcome, with the Flyers up 5-2, the 22-year-old Art Ross Trophy winner netted one past Biron to shorten the gap – his second of the night – but the Pens weren’t able to pull out a win.
With the Pens leading the series 2-1, Malkin will look to continue his point streak on Tuesday, when the teams will faceoff for Game 4.
