Buffalo Sabres add goalie Mikael Tellqvist in trade with Phoenix

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Sabres have added some goaltending insurance.

They acquired Mikael Tellqvist from the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Sabres starter Ryan Miller is currently sidelined with an ankle injury. Patrick Lalime has been getting the starts in his place.

Tellqvist has appeared in 15 games for the Coyotes this season and has a 7-5-1 record with a .907 save percentage and 2.86 goals-against average.

The 29-year-old is earning US$800,000 and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

In another move, the Sabres agreed to a US$9-million, two-year contract extension with centre Tim Connolly. He would have been a free agent on July 1.

He has 26 points (11-15) in 29 games for the Sabres this season.

Who should the Vancouver Canucks hire as their new head coach?

"Last year we came in as maybe an underdog, quietly. Got off to the right start just because teams weren't really ready for us. But this time around that's not the case. They realize we are a good team and they're ready to go against us, right off the get-go."

- Los Angeles' Colin Fraser. The Kings have lost two in a row and are now tied 2-2 in their series against the San Jose Sharks.
