A report from a Montreal radio station last week claiming the Tampa Bay Lightning were shopping Vincent Lecavalier sparked denials from the team, his agent and Lecavalier himself.

The basis for the report was the Lightning’s supposed financial problems forcing the club to try and distance itself from the 11-year, $85 million deal they signed Lecavalier to just last summer.

In addition to the team’s denials, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly claimed the league was satisfied the Bolts’ financial obligations were being fulfilled following the recent restructuring of the deal between the club’s current and outgoing ownership.

That should be enough to kill the Lecavalier rumors, but some in the media and blogosphere insist the club was “exploring” trade options involving their captain, noting his new contract with its no-trade clause doesn’t take effect until July 1.

Naturally, this resurrected speculation that Lecavalier might be dealt to the Montreal Canadiens, who have supposedly coveted him for years.

Even if the Bolts were trying to move Lecavalier, the length and value of his new contract is almost as good as a no-movement clause.

If the Lightning truly wanted to dump salary by moving his contract – which will be worth more than $7 million per season starting in 2009-10 - they’d have to accept a considerable amount of salary in return to make the deal happen.

With more than half of the league’s teams possessing payrolls for next season in excess of $35 million and concerns the salary cap for 2009-10 could flat-line or drop to nearly $50 million, the Lightning would have a difficult time finding suitors for Lecavalier’s contract.

It’s not that teams wouldn’t want him on their rosters, but the fact is few could comfortably afford him during tough economic times.

• Former NHL star Jaromir Jagr stated last week he wouldn’t rule out a possible return to the league in the future.

Jagr, who signed a two-year contract last summer with Omsk of Russia’s Kontinental League, suggested he’d consider signing with either the Rangers or Penguins, two of his former NHL clubs.

Of course it’ll depend on whether or not those two teams are willing to sign him. Jagr claimed he’d be willing to play for the league minimum to rejoin the Penguins out of gratitude to team owner and former teammate Mario Lemieux for all he did to help him develop into a star.

• Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle has long been a subject of trade rumors this season and last week he added fuel to the fire by saying he’d be willing to waive his no-trade clause if requested by management.

Leafs GM Brian Burke has stated he won’t ask any of his players currently with no-movement clauses to waive them, but it’s believed if one of them - be it Kaberle or fellow Leafs blueliner Pavel Kubina - wants out he’d be willing to deal them.

It might be in the players’ best interests to request a trade now when the two would have a say in their potential destinations. Should the Leafs miss the playoffs, there’s a clause in their contracts that provides Burke a two-month window to deal them to any NHL team without permission.

The Leafs aren’t about to tank the season to try to land in draft lottery contention for the 2009 first overall pick, but a package centered around either Kaberle or Kubina could be used by Burke to try to land a high pick come this June’s entry draft.

I Just Wanted To Comment On Something I Posted Here Or Somewhere's, On A Possible Trade, Which Turned Out To Become A Reality. That Being The Trading Of Mathieu Garon To Pittsburg. Now, Not Overlly Exciting, I Still Believe They Made The Right Choice In Keeping Roloson And The Kid (Who's Name Alludes Me At The Moment) I Was Even More Interested In The Return, Which May Help Out Later On. Sabourin And Ryan Stone. Sabourin Could Fetch Something For Teams Looking For A Decent Back-Up. And Stone, Well, I Lived In Brandon For A While And Somewhat Glad To See A Former Wheat King With The Oil. I Was Hoping They'd Land Him If This Deal Did Go Through, Back When I Was Just Hoping. Anyway, Hope They Make A Few More Changes, Maybe Try For Bouwmeester, He's An Edmonton Kid, I Always Wanted To See Him Play For The Oilers, I Always Trade For Him In My NHL Video Game Dynasty Modes, Seems To Work Well There. Peace.

tell jagr that we do not care about him any more as a nhl player and that he can stay in russia and play there. as for moving kaberle, it would be in the best interest of the team but let's get something in return.

You make a Good Point Erik Paul, but Sarich left TB cause they didn't have room so keep regher he is one of the best hitters in the league and is at a 4 mil per year contract for the next 5 or so years while Sarich is a 3.6 mil hit and half the player. leave roberts on Tb But get tokarski if keetley leaves throw in some picks and maybe some prospects to sweeten the deal.(namely Germyn and greentree) this would give Flames a legit 1st line center for iggy and if u must throw in Vandy

Habs don't need Vinnie - he's lazy and overpaid. He'll show up occasionally and they'll roast him in Montreal if he doesn't show up. We need a defenseman and a solid scorer who will work (give me St. Louis over Vinnie).

PCL: Get another team for Ontario. Unlike the Panthers, Central Florida supports the Lightning. Why don't you move Gretsky and the Coyotes to Southern Ontario. That would be a twofer...both an NHL Team and the Great One!

I herd that the deal for Vinny to Montreal Is as Follows; To Tampa Bay -Thomas Plekanic -Christopher Higgins -P.K Subban -1st Round Pick To Montreal -Vincent Lecavlier If you think of it thats a hefty price to pay, Higgins and Plekanic are only young and have a Promising Future. As The Same as PK subban. And you never know what the 1st Round Pick May be. It could be another Alex Ovechkin or Even a Bobby Orr. Beside that you have to sign some free agents at the end of the season(komisarek) Your not gonna be getting him cheap either. Plus you have to pay Vinnys Contratc on top of that :O Bob Gainey should just go out and get bouwmeester and Kaberle.

All this talk about Vinny coming"HOME" might happen but I'm hoping that it does not. How many players/draft picks do we have to give up? Also do we mortgage the future for one player? People have to be realistic that Vinny's contract is for 11 years not 2-3 years. We would be on the hook for all that time. Getting Vinny would be a dream but considering the size of his contract , it just doesn't make sense. I love our team now and feel that we can compete for the cup, we need another defenseman or two but we are not far off. There is 11 free agents at the end of the year and Gainey needs room to sign most of them, with Vinny's contract it would be a hinderance more than anything. I am not a fan of signing players to long term contracts because there is no guarantees that the player would not become lazy during this time knowing that he has a contract for alot more years. My advice to Mr.Gainey: Save your money for now and wait, I'm sure that other trade opportunities will come along soon as alot of teams will be looking to shed some salary and you won't have to mortgage the farm to get them.

2 things when it comes to trading Lecavalier. 1) His huge 85 million dollar contract pays about 10 mil a year for the first 3, then as it progresses his annual salary goes down until the last year of it pays about 1 mil. In the long run it pays to have him. 2) If these guys in the front office trade him, hockey will die in tampa bay. you can't trade away the face of the team.

Trade Vinnie to Montreal then sell the Bolts to Balsillie and move them to Southern Ontario. I will be first in line for season's tickets!

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
