Rookie goaltender Mason makes 24 saves as Blue Jackets blank Kings 2-0

LOS ANGELES - In a matchup of rookie goalies who appear to have bright futures, the Blue Jackets' Steve Mason stopped everything. The Kings' Jonathan Quick let one get by him.

Mason made 24 saves, Kris Russell scored during a power play in the second period and Columbus defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 on Monday night.

Mason believes he's growing with experience.

"Playing a lot helps because you get into a rhythm. Shutouts are nice, obviously, but what we're looking for is wins right now," the 20-year-old goalie said after logging his fourth career shutout.

The 21-year-old Quick also faced 24 shots, but couldn't stop Russell's rebound late in the second period.

The Blue Jackets' defenceman scored Columbus' first goal in three games against the Kings this season. Jason LaBarbera shut them out 3-0 on Dec. 6, and Quick blanked them by the same score last Tuesday.

Russell's goal ended a Columbus scoring drought against Los Angeles that spanned 186 minutes, 39 seconds, dating back to Rick Nash's power-play goal in the second period of a 3-2 shootout loss on Feb. 10, 2008, at Columbus.

Russell knocked in a rebound of his own shot at 18:36 of the second period for his second goal of the season while Michal Handzus was serving an interference penalty.

Nash slid a pass through Los Angeles defenders from the right boards, with the puck glancing off a stick of one of the Kings' defenders. Russell, just to the left of the crease, wristed a shot that bounced off Quick and back to him, and Russell poked the puck high over the sprawling goalie and into the net.

Nash scored his 16th goal into an empty net with 1:15 to play.

In a game mostly dominated by the defences, Mason made several fine saves, including blocking and smothering the puck with a crowd of players in front during a Los Angeles power play in the second period.

"We had opportunities in the previous two games against them and we didn't capitalize on them," Mason said of the Kings' two earlier shutout victories. "We only got essentially one goal tonight, but it counted and the guys did the rest of the job in front of me."

Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock was pleased with the play of the goalie and the defencemen.

"The seven defencemen, plus Mason, we're trying to make ourselves a very hard group to play against back there. We're not the prettiest group or the fanciest, but we kind of maul you a little bit," Hitchcock said.

"That's the way we're built. They're able to keep the shots to the outside and they're confident that he can stop those outside shots."

Quick also played well. In the second period, he made an alert save on a fine play by the Blue Jackets' Andrew Murray, who fought his way up the right boards with the puck and whipped a pass to Jakub Voracek in the slot. But Quick was squared up and blocked Voracek's wrist shot.

"He's giving us a chance to win the game every game that he's played and that's all you can ask from any goaltender," Los Angeles coach Terry Murray said. "We have to score some goals for him, he's played with a lot of energy and a lot of composure and he's giving us a good look.

"It's nice to see that we have good young guys like this in the organization."

Quick was drafted in the third round in 2005. Mason went in the third round the following year.

Notes: Mason has been tough on the road, giving up two or fewer goals in six of his seven road appearances. ... Quick made 24 saves in his shutout of Columbus on Tuesday. Mason had 39. ... Los Angeles was coming off a 4-0 win over Phoenix and had scored three or more goals in its past four games.

Easy as fishing. Jessie doesnt know half as much as he thinks he does, but that is what makes it fun. Hitchcock is getting too old for this crap. I can see him out of Columbus before the season is over, perhaps around the trade deadline when the Jackets start dumping salary.......again! Are they going to make a dvd of the Flyers victory?

Don't even try arguing with Jessie, he knows everything there is to know about hockey and the rest of us are blinded by whatever team we cheer for. Jessie, we get it, Jackets 3 Flyers 0, this really is the high point of the season for you isn't it? If the Flyer's are such a god awful, over rated team why is beating them such a thrill for you?And the Kings are really lighting it up this year aren't they? I guess when you cheer for the Jackets being close to 500 is considered being a good team. But the rest of us are morons compared to you.

Now I KNOW you don't know a thing! NHL2k9 is the WORST. Yeah, Maclean had nothing to do with drafting two duds (Brule and Picard--and passing up Kopitar, Richards, Carter, Getzlaf and others in the process) and putting the organization back two years AT LEAST with those picks. If you had watched either the Minny game or the Dallas game (which is evident that you haven't) you would know that they were legitimately screwed--the same way Buffalo was screwed vs. Pitts. A screw job is a screw job and some have a desire to see the integrity of the game maintained. Others just want to be a-holes and talk smack about something they know nothing about...sound familiar? Jackets 3, Flyers NADA

Keep living the dream Jessie. I think you are playing NHL2K9 a little too much there. You probably never lose on the easy level and wonder why they arent as good in real life as they are on the game. Quit blaming Maclean and the war room in Toronto for your teams mediocrity.

Flabgarden--spoken like a guy who has no clue. If you don't think the kings are a good team, you haven't been watching. They are extremely well coached, big, fast, gritty, and have some skilled forwards. Their goaltending issue has seemingly been ironed out and are really coming on. Caught the flyers on a bad travel day? Awwww, the 30 minute flight from Chicago was tough eh? Sitting in a posh airplane with everything at their disposal was too hard for them? Nice excuse. Also, the jackets have had the chances to draft well, but the imbecile Maclean mucked up more than one draft and has set the org. behind about 3 years. Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about so you shouldn't even bother trying. Are you flyer guy incongnito? If so: JACKETS 3, Flyers- ZILCH!!!

much agreed.... for a team that has been slow on the scoring yet squeaked out a few wins, it might make one wonder how this is possible. HE IS THE REASON. Imagine him between the pipes with a fully healthy team. We definitely would be makin up ground to the playoffs. Hopefully he can carry us to out first playoff birth still...

Playoffs............not going to happen for the Jackets this year. They caught the Flyers at the right time with injuries and all. The Kings arent that good to begin with. I can see the Jackets getting maybe 80 points this year............which is good for them. The Jackets have sucked enough over the years to have been able to draft well. Maybe in a year or 2 they can get in.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
