Leafs forward Stajan out at least a week after being struck by soccer ball

WASHINGTON - The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without forward Matt Stajan for at least a week after he was struck in the right eye with a soccer ball during a pre-practice warmup.

Stajan suffered a hyphema, caused by a pooling of blood, in his right eye when he was struck during a warmup exercise Saturday. Burke said the injury is not serious and expected Stajan to be out one to two weeks while fluid drains from the eye.

Burke said warmup exercise routines will not change because of the injury.

"I'm not going to eliminate soccer (warmups) because one guy gets a ball in the eye," Burke said.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
