Don Parsons breaks all-time minor league goal-scoring record with No. 678

Don Parsons, a forward with the Bloomington PrairieThunder of the IHL, netted his 678th career goal to become the all-time minor league goal-scoring leader Saturday night. Parsons passes Kevin Kerr, who retired after the 2004-05 season. The goal was Parsons’ 18th of the 08-09 season.

Parsons scored the all-time tying goal at the 12:53 mark of the first period against Flint. He netted the historic goal 20 seconds into the second period, putting the puck past Flint goaltender Chad Alban. Bloomington’s Nick Goyens and Marty Standish assisted on Parsons record breaking goal.

The 39-year-old Boston native is playing in his 17th season of professional hockey. He began his professional playing career in 1992 with the Nashville Knights of the ECHL, joining the team after he finished his senior year of college at University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Parsons currently ranks first among active players in goals scored (678) and points scored (1,303).

I had the distinct pleasure of watching Don Parsons play for many years here as a member of the Memphis (Now Mississippi) Riverkings of the Central Hockey League. He led us to back to back league championships. But above that, he is a fine human being who always had time for fans and gave a tremendous amount of time back to the community. I am pleased to see him reach such a milestone. Although it is a minor league record, it is still a tremendous accomplishment. I applaud Don Parsons, it could not happen to a better person. respectfully, Joe Liegel

well, how intelligent of the n.h.l. ??? the nashville knights ??? were they a carry-over from the atlanta knights or did they play in nashville before atlanta ?? either way, if a minor league team doesn't last in countryville, with attractive ticket prices, why were the predators placed there ??? if we figure that one out, perhaps that'll tell us why those fans still hoot and hollar that bush league "you suck": chant at the opposing goaltender. and then there's that kindergarten like whistles that the fans blow on, when jordan tootoo enters the playing surface. has anyone at the league level indicated to that team, that they are in the nhl, and not the central hockey league ???

Good on the guy. it's a Bull Durhamesque story. Predictably, I've never heard of him. No one's ever going to break this record, ever!

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
