Steve Mason makes 20 saves as Blue Jackets shutout Flyers 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After being shutout in the previous two games, rookie goalie Steve Mason made a rare early lead stand for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Mason made 20 saves for his third shutout in Columbus' 3-0 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday night, the Blue Jackets' first victory against the Flyers in franchise history. He improved to 10-7-1 and lowered his NHL-best GAA to 1.87.

Jan Hejda and Andrew Murray scored in the first period, and Manny Malhotra completed the scoring in the second. Columbus is 1-4-3 against Philadelphia.

The Blue Jackets were blanked by Phoenix and Los Angeles in their previous two outings and hadn't scored in 127 minutes, 46 seconds entering the game. The streak went another 3:22 into the first period before Hejda scored his second of the season.

"It was really nice (to be ahead), especially because I had been sitting on one-goal and two-goal games," Mason said. "To get the early lead gave me the confidence that it was going to be a good night."

The Blue Jackets took advantage of the travel-weary Flyers and an energized sellout crowd of 18,402 - the team's largest of the season - to take the early lead.

Philadelphia was delayed landing in Chicago on Friday and missed the morning skate before losing 5-1 to the Blackhawks on Friday night. Afterward, fog prevented the Flyers' plane from taking off and the team didn't arrive in Columbus until mid-afternoon Saturday.

Flyers defenceman Braydon Coburn felt the schedule might have been a factor in the team being shut out for the first time in 76 games, including the playoffs.

"It affects the guys in different ways, but I think, echoing what Coach (John) Stevens said, it's more mental than it is physical when you're faced with a little break in the routine like that," Coburn said.

Philadelphia wore down in the third period when it had just four shots. "They're a team that they usually wins the board battles when they're successful," Murray said. "We wanted to take it to them and hopefully win that and we were able to."

The Blue Jackets also created havoc in front of the goal as evidenced by Hejda's goal. Although it was unassisted, Derek Dorsett was instrumental on the play. After coming out of a scramble with the puck to the right of the goal his shot got behind goalie Antero Niittymaki, but Ossi Vaananen was there to clear it off the goal-line.

Unfortunately for Vaananen, the puck went straight to Hejda in the left circle and he quickly fired it into the back of the net.

"The goalie was laying down on the ice. I try every time to shoot it through traffic," Hejda said. "They've got a physical team so we tried to play a simple game in our zone."

Columbus has the worst power play in the league, but it converted its second chance at 18:08 for the 2-0 lead. Kris Russell took a pass from former Flyer R.J. Umberger in the left corner and skated around the net before centring to Murray on the opposite side for a one-timer.

"We can't make excuses right now," Stevens said. "We've got to regroup, we've got to tighten up, we've got to do the little things better. That includes staying out of the penalty box early in the game."

Malhotra had the lone goal in the second period. He took a cross-ice feed from Rick Nash and wristed a shot past Niittymaki from the right circle. The score could have been worse heading into the third. Murray hit the right post on a redirect from Umberger in the first and Kristian Huselius clanged one off the crossbar with 52 seconds left in the second.

"If we get a lead on teams we're really difficult to play against and teams don't come back on us," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "The players feel like if we have a lead going into the third period, Mason will not get scored on. That's the confidence we have in him right now."

Mason was at his best during a Flyers' power play midway through the second when he stopped Simon Gagne and Scott Hartnell as each was parked in the crease. Mason also made a point-blank pad save of Gagne early in the third.

Notes: Huselius was doubtful after the morning skate because of illness but he was in the lineup and assisted on the third goal. Forward Craig MacDonald was called up from Syracuse of the American Hockey League as insurance, but did not play. ... Malhotra won 15 of 17 faceoffs. ... Philadelphia defenceman Kimmo Timonen suffered a chip fracture of his right ankle Friday and did not play Saturday. He is expected to miss at least a week. ... Hartnell broke a big toe in the Chicago game, but played against the Blue Jackets. ... The Flyers are 0-2 on a six-game trip. They play Tuesday at Vancouver.

Flyer guy--JACKETS 0...FORMIDABLE FLYERS ZERO!!!! Wow..you mean you have 5 teams in the east to contend with? The only way the flyers will make the playoffs is by preying on the weak of the east. If they played in the West...wow...well, 2 out of 8 tries at beating a western team is all I can say. The jackets 6-1-1 vs. east would be right up there with the Bruins. 5 on 5 that team is a joke and an embarrassment. How many times did Nash walk right through your entire team the other night. Nice coaching. Good thing Nitty played well and the jackets are limited in their skill department...good thing for the flyers that is. Nah...the jackets will never be a team that can buy as many players as the flyers will/can...however your brilliant GM will be in a bit of a pickle when the smurf Briere comes off his 'fist pumping abdominal' injury. Who goes then? Jones? Upshall? Every year for the next several the flyers are going to be in a bind and have to let good young players walk. The guy who drafted all your good players no longer holds that position. Maclean was a jackass and clueless alas, now he is gone. Of course you wouldn't know that because you have no clue about anything going on in the league that doesn't have to do with orange and black. I don't know if the jackets will make the playoffs or not, but the 2 points they ripped from the flyers will help. The flyers 3rd round-smoke-and-mirrors-appearance last year won't be happening again so I hope you enjoyed it. By the way, for Richards being this supposed 'great' player, what is up with all his turnovers and backhand passes to no one? Liked his spin-a-rama at center ice that uh...led to yet another turnover...brilliant.

You can get as excited about this regular season win as you like, talk to me when the playoffs start and your Jacket's are hitting the golf course. It doesn't take a expert to know that the west is stronger than the east, but the Bruins,Rangers,Devils,Pens,Habs, aren't exactly substandard. I'm being sincere here Jessie, enjoy the moment, when a regular season 3-0 win is reason for this much excitement in your life it says something. And if your team could draft you might have some payroll tied up in your top six forward group as well. Cheers.

Ah flyer guy how did you enjoy your second jackets game in 2 years? Was quite the beating wasn't it? Officiating isn't only bad when you lose yanno...poor officiating is poor officiating. Yep, it IS pretty exciting to beat a 'juggernaut of the east' like the flyers *rolls eyes*...their top 6 forwards are 2/3 of our entire payroll!! The well coached jackets made the flyers look like the phonies that they are. If not for the flyers special teams, they are nothing. If not for Timonen, their pp isn't good either (as evidenced by the stifling pk of the jackets vs. the flyers). Jackets are 6-1-1 vs. the east and so far the mighty flyers have 2 wins out of 8 tries...awwww...they prey on the likes of the substandard teams that are littered throughout the east. Hey flyerguy: JACKETS 3, Flyers: ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!

Hilarious!!! You win the game and still whine about officiating. It's funny to see Jessie getting as excited as a schoolgirl about winning one game, I guess when you cheer for the Jacket's beating a team like the Flyer's is pretty exciting. Congratulations.

I was at the game Chris, and didn't really see what all went on, I just saw Jared laying on the ice then get called for a dive. When I watched the replay later that night, Boll was just standing there and Cote's punch came from up and under and it wasn't a soft touch either. I guess the refs. figure he should be able to take a punch better than that considering he led the league in fights last year. It was a poor call because he isn't a 'diving' type of player and never has been. If he goes down, it is usually a good punch that put him there. Poor call is right.

You know, I really hate to go there but it is becoming more and more apparent that the officials have it out for the Jackets. They have been on the receiving end of some of the worst calls I have ever seen this season, and that diving call against Jared Boll was the straw that broke the camel's back. When you are standing on ice skates on ICE and you get punched in the face, what is the correct way to react to that? If you fall over, you are diving? Those pansy zebras barely get bumped and they fall over and now they are going to call someone for diving after getting punched? I'm convinced that they knew they couldn't get away with not giving Cote a penalty but they didn't want the Jackets to get a 5 on 3 so they decided to call Boll for diving to cancel out Cote's penalty. Horrible officiating.

Dear NHL officials, please move the Columbus, Blue Jackets to the eastern conference where they belong. Thank you for your time.

Suuwwwweeeeeeeeeettttt!!!!!! Right from the drop of the puck the jackets swarmed the mighty flyers, and Richards and his bunch couldn't find and answer for the jackets stifling play...the WORST pp in the league even managed a pp goal vs. the threatening PK of the philly flyers. The home run passes that they kept trying were killed promptly before they got started. Gagne, Richards and Carter? I thought these guys were supposed to be fast? All night they were stifled and snubbed out. LOOOOVVVED the Klesla hit on Gagne in the third. I guess the flyers can only feast against the likes of the NYI, Atlanta Thrashers, Tampa Bay Lightning and the lowly Ottawa Sens. As soon as they get vs. a well coached team who can actually defend their ability (or lack thereof) to plough through is exposed. Gee, the west is tough so far, isn't it?
