OK, it’s a little early to be talking about Stanley Cup final matchups, but all the talk of Christmas and wish lists has inspired a wish list of a different sort: five Stanley Cup finals I’d like to see (and they’re pretty realistic, too).

Without further ado:

1. Detroit-Pittsburgh
A 2009 rematch of the 2008 final tops the list. And maybe it’s the Penguins’ turn this time. The kids are older, more experienced and more mature physically. (Don’t forget Evgeni Malkin, 22, Sidney Crosby, 21, and Jordan Staal, 20, still wouldn’t qualify for an old-age pension even after adding their ages together.) Marc-Andre Fleury, 24, is getting better; Chris Osgood, 36, is not. Pens defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney should both be well-rested after missing most of the season nursing injuries. And then there’s the whole Marian Hossa situation – the sniper spurned the Pens to sign with the Wings, saying he thought Detroit was his best chance to win the Cup. That’s not the kind of thing that gets you invited to Sidney’s house, Marian.
Odds of Detroit-Pittsburgh final: 8-1

2. San Jose-Boston
The Sharks, as usual, are cruising through the regular season, winning almost at will. The big surprise is, so are the Bruins. Claude Julien has his B’s hitting on all cylinders. Tim Thomas is unorthodox and unbeatable in net; Zdeno Chara leads the defense; and Marc Savard and Phil Kessel are driving a surprisingly potent offense. And, oh yeah, Milan Lucic will pop you on the nose if you get out of line. Of course, what makes this matchup so alluring is the prospect of pitting Joe Thornton up against his old Bruins team. With Dan Boyle and Rob Blake on the blueline, San Jose appears ready to take the next step in the post-season. Really, we’re serious this time.
Odds of San Jose-Boston final: 20-1

3. Montreal-Chicago
The centennial-celebrating Canadiens against the team with the longest Cup drought: How’s that for an Original Six throwback final? The Habs are 100 years old this season, while the Hawks haven’t won the Cup since 1961. This final is all about the league’s history and tradition, but presented with 21st-century flair. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on one side, Carey Price on the other. There’s a lot of young skill in this matchup, especially on Chicago’s roster. (In fact, if you think the Hawks are too young to give it a go this season, insert Detroit for Chicago to retain the Original Six connection. Better odds, too.)
Odds of Montreal-Chicago final: 35-1

4. Philadelphia-Edmonton
Twenty years ago, Flyers-Oilers finals were all the rage. Edmonton faced off with Philly for the championship in ’85 and ’87, winning both times. Ron Hextall at least made it interesting in ’87, pushing the Oilers to seven games. The Flyers have made it to the final five times since last winning the Stanley Cup in 1975, losing all five times. Edmonton made it back in 2006 for the first time since the Oilers’ last Cup in 1990. This would be a fast and chippy series, kind of the way they played it in the early ’80s.
Odds of Philadelphia-Edmonton final: 40-1

5. Vancouver-New York Rangers
Here’s another nod to a past Cup final. The Rangers outlasted the Canucks in seven games in 1994, ending New York’s 54-year Cup slump and making Mark Messier a Broadway legend up there with Liza Minnelli and Mel Brooks. This time, the common thread is long-time Canucks captain Markus Naslund, skating his first season in Rangers blue.
Odds of Vancouver-NY Rangers final: 50-1

I love how all the wings fans bash the sharks fans for posting on here. (when they do it everyday) Yes, the wings beat SJ 6-0. The next time they played SJ actually played their game and downed the wings 6-5 without Blake or Lukowich, 2 important players. Guess the wings fans forgot who was leading the season series 2-1. I can't wait for the Sharks to explode in the playoffs this year, their depth is unbeatable. The wings will give SJ a run for their money, but i think SJ wins 4-2 in the playoffs. and goes on to sweep the B's. Just watch a sharks game this year. the chemistry, the skill, and most importantly the work ethic is unbelievable.

Shut up, it's to damn early to be guessing who's going win the Super Bowl let alone the Lords Cup. Who the hell wrote this article anyway. Shut up.

Oilers in the final? Are you kidding me? They're not even going to make the playoffs. Jeez.

I saw Keith Jones yesterday at the California Pizza Kitchen in Stamford CT...I was certainly excited to have my first random encounter with a gonger in public. Way too early to comment on these matchups...would love to see an original six matchup, or a Crosby-Malkin return to the Stanley Cup Finals - both would be good for the sports. Also, would love to see a Canadien team pick up the Cup...this is long overdue. Bring back the Whale.

I'll start thinking about playoff matchups around April 15th. Until then we'll just have to see how this long, drawn out, 82 game "preseason" goes. It would be great to see an original 6 matchup in the finals. Or at least see some teams that don't have palm trees outside their arena.

Hassan, you really have a bug up your backside about the Sharks, don't you. Have you by any chance watched them pay a game all year? You might want to try. They very well may still crumble in the playoffs, but these are not Ron Wilson's Sharks. In their 25 wins, they have out worked the other team in almost every one of them, not won on pure talent. Crap, the outworked the other team in three of the losses too. If Chicago could win a close game, their record would be right there with Det, SJ, and Boston. Their only losses by two goals have been with empty netters and a goal in the last two minutes when they had to press. The other ten losses have been by one goal. When that team learns to win close games consistently, they will be scary good. Not this year, but maybe next year though. Called it SJ/Pit before the season, and it is still early, but the Teddy Bears are looking awfully tough to beat right now.

I am a die hard Flames fan...please let them make it out of the 1st round this yr..other than that..San Jose or Detroit will make it out of the West. And I really think Boston will come out of the East. I don't know, I've watched them play...they are really a great team that is coming into their own...just a feeling I have. If there was a surprise team to come out of the West please let it be Calgary (okay gave my head a shake) it could be Chicago...look at what they did to Edmonton last night. Two young talented teams and Chicago killed them...their youth may be the deciding factor on how far they go though. No offence to Montreal fans but your team is filled with talented but soft players..you got one of our softies this yr in Tanguay...I think Montreal has a ton of talent but there has to be some grit involved in making it far... One interesting point as a Flames fan...you may want to take who ever plays Calgary in the 1st round (if they were to beat Calgary off your list). Calgary plays such a hard hitting gritty style that teams don't seem to have much left after they beat us...sucks to be us...

I am a Wings' fan, but the Wings of this season have not played like last year's Stanley Cup winner. That doesn't necessarily mean they can't, or won't, pick up their game down the stretch. If the playoffs began tomorrow and they wound up facing the Sharks in the conference finals, though, I couldn't see them winning the series. Of course, lesser teams than this year's Wings have embarrassed the Sharks in the playoffs. Boston is the strongest Eastern Conference team I've seen this season. They really crushed the Wings -- and I don't think the Wings played particularly poorly against them. It's hard for me to imagine that Pittsburgh could knock Boston out of the playoffs. Then again, if Fleury stands on his head... If the Wings can't repeat, it would be nice to see a darkhorse -- Minnesota or Buffalo, say -- win the Cup. Probably not going to happen, but...
