Man falls from upper deck at Scotiabank Place during Senators-Thrashers game

OTTAWA - A 21-year-old man was taken to an Ottawa hospital Wednesday night after falling from the third level at Scotiabank Place during the Senators' 5-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.

The man was walking to his seat carrying some beers when he tripped over a woman's purse, fell over four people and went over the railing to the level below onto other fans.

"He was not inebriated," Senators president and CEO Roy Mlakar said in a statement following the game.

"He was treated for lacerations ... obviously somewhat stunned, Dr. (Don) Chow did treat him and he (was transferred) to Queensway Carleton (Hospital), but he was totally cognizant and recognizing that there was nothing serious."

Two other people were treated at the scene while a third person was also taken to the hospital with lacerations and a neck injury, though Mlakar said that, too, was done as a precautionary measure.

"A woman, approximately 33 years old, has neck injuries but to what extent we do not know. She was treated and also went to Queensway Carleton but did not appear to be serious at all," Mlakar said.

The drop straight down from the third level to the ground below is approximately 15 feet.

This is the first such incident in the 13-year history of Scotiabank Place, formerly the Corel Centre and the Palladium.

I happened right in front of me, the guy obviously was feeling no pain when he fell. He stood up after he fell to celebrate his sucsess but then quickly sat down as the blood started to flow. Kinda ruined my focus on the rest of the game. And yes the lady he fell on was really freaked out! She didn't move for almost 30 minutes Very messed up

Just wait until the Senators choke in the playoffs again. Then you'll be hearing all kinds of stories like this. Except the trip won't be accidental! :^P

Stuff like that happens to fans. I just went off the end of the spectators stands at a local arena. I was trying to demonstrate to my grandson who was the goalie for his minor novice game to keep his feet moving and generate snow in the crease. My right foot went off the end of the bench and into a nicely placed garbage can.The left knee hit the concrete floor. I am still sore but Grandfathers always survive. We are Canadians.

I saw this happen years ago at the Winnipeg Arena- Wacky situation where this guy was actually running along the bar at the bottom of the upper level section then slipped and landed on his nuts then rolled over the side to the concrete on the next level. Had to be the funniest thing I ever saw at a sporting event- What a goofball he was; serves him right for getting kicked off of the 'tight rope (walk) team' at the circus!

@whatsthatsmell, he wasn't a klutz, a woman in the 300 level had left her purse in the aisle and he tripped over it.@Steve, a reporter on the radio said that apparently he was most upset at losing his 2 beers (at $10 each, I would be too!)

I seen this happen last night. It was my first live NHL game. Has to be the craziest thing I have ever seen with my own eyes! At first I thought he was going to be dead, but he got up right away. Everyone made him sit down.

I seen this as well, he had such momentum i thought he would go over the second level down to the first as well. I never assumed that he may be intoxicated because I had mentioned several times how steep the 300 level is and that there is barely any room to walk. Its like walking a tight rope when trying to get to your seat. Unfortunate luck for him

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
