THN.com Blog: Leafs future rests solely with Burke

One of the interesting sidebars to the Toronto Maple Leafs hiring Brian Burke is that Maple Leaf fans will no longer be able to accuse those who run the organization of being a bunch of money-grubbing slimeballs who have no regard for the Leaf tradition or the on-ice product as long as the money kept rolling in.

Forget for a moment that it was never, ever true. The Maple Leaf ownership has been a lot of things - incompetent comes to mind fairly quickly - but it has always been steered by those who have a personal investment in seeing the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup. Of course they loved making money.

Ask anyone who runs any of the other 29 teams in the league and they'll tell you that's one of the primary goals of the business.

It was also largely a myth that the Leafs board of directors, led by the powerful Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, was a meddlesome crew that stuck its nose into hockey affairs. First of all, there's not an executive in the league from Ken Holland down to Don Waddell who doesn't need to run major signings and transactions by the people who sign the checks. Yes, board chairman Larry Tanenbaum did essentially force former GM John Ferguson to sign his good friend Tie Domi to a contract, but the board largely approved almost every move each GM brought before it.

But now any chance of meddling is gone with the hiring of Burke. There will be no dispute as to who is in charge of the hockey department now and Burke will have unfettered authority to make any and all moves without having to gain approval.

His contract does stipulate he must report directly to Richard Peddie, but make no mistake, Peddie will no longer have any say in hockey affairs and it’s rumored his run with the team will end in August when his contract is up.

Burke would have it no other way. Peddie has largely been emasculated from the hockey decision-making process and for that, Leafs fans should be eternally thankful.

Starting Saturday when, it’s anticipated, Burke is officially named GM, this is his show to do with it as he sees fit. The Leafs board and Peddie will fade into the background as the faceless corporate types who sign the checks and keep their mouths shut when it comes to hockey matters.

Any success or failure the Leafs have from now on will be solely attributed to Burke. He insisted it be that way and for the first time in decades, there will be no mistaking where the buck stops when it comes to the Maple Leafs on-ice fortunes.

If the Leafs DON'T win the Cup with Burke here in the next 6 years it will be a colossal disappointment. That would make it 47 years and possibly their best shot gone. The pressure is huge. 47 years turns into 60 pretty quick and 80 after that. Just ask the Cubs.

That's true enough, Fletcher has done a good job so far, but who will get the credit for the eventual/possible Cup victory??

Toskala is not highly tradeable. Huet went for a 2nd round pick last year and Brzygalov went on waivers, both arguably better goalies than he is. Plus, he's more valuable to the Leafs than he is in trade. Whose going to play net for them? Pogge?

Just like what happened in Anaheim where Burke get's credit for the great job Carlyle has done, do you actually think the same won't happen in T.O. with Wilson? Wilson has actually got a bunch of 3rd stringers playing decent hockey on some night's. Burke will bring in a few big name's and we'll see where this thing go's. He may actually do it. Then again he may screw up (see Vancouver) any chance the makebelief's have of being a contender.

Burke is SOOOOOOOOO overrated! Leafs (dumb ass name) will still stink for years to come (shooting for 100 years)!

I am not a leafs fan, however i actually believe for the first time in a while that they are headed in the right direction. Burke is overrated, but at least he IS a GM and has complete control, unlike "hockey people" put into the position before him who were essentially puppets. They also did a really good job in picking Ron Wilson as coach, he will make his players play hard and keep them accountable. Even if he is replaced in a few years, he should have at the very least implemented an atmosphere in leaf land that trying your hardest is the only way to play, something that has been missing for a while. The leafs do have a few assets in Kaberle and Toskala that are highly tradeable, and a cornerstone in Luke Schenn. I hope the leafs do well in the foreseeable future because it is good for hockey whether you like it or not.

We'll find out just how good Burke is. I don't know if he is the correct choice but the one thing he does have which a Toronto GM hasn't had since Cliff Fletcher's first tour of duty is complete control of the Hockey Department. That is the most important part of hiring Burke because now there is one person who is accountable. Yes he will need to consult and get approval from the Board on some issues but every sports team has that reporting structure in place. However, with Burke in charge, there won't be delay in decisions being made like there is now. In time Toronto will find out if Burke really does walk on water or if he's all hype. He's going to need a lot of support because he's 3-4 years away from really competing for a playoff sport and the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup.

Burke in Toronto, the world's most important hockey market bar none, will be a spectacle to behold. Of course the other five Canadian cities and their fans will be totally jealous that our team will get even more coverage. Burke will build us a Stanley Cup contender. It won't happen overnight but I believe he is the man, with Nonis, to take the most deserving hockey fans on what will be an incredible ride. CBC, TSN, SportsNet, THN and others are smart to always give the Leafs top priority. They are the most important hockey franchise and deserve all the media attention they get.
