Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo injured against Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH - Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo left the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday with an apparent left leg injury.

Luongo, a two-time NHL all-star, was injured while making what appeared to be a routine save on a shot by Philippe Boucher about five minutes into the game.

He slowly collapsed to the ice and was assisted off while favouring his left leg.

No official word on his condition was immediately available.

Curtis Sanford replaced Luongo in goal.

Luongo, twice a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, entered the game ranked seventh in the NHL in save percentage (.928) and ninth in goals-against average (2.18) this season for a Vancouver team that has not lost in regulation in eight games.

Later Saturday, the Canucks recalled goaltender Cory Schneider from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The club also re-assigned defenceman Nolan Baumgartner to Manitoba.

Schnieder, 22, has posted a record of 10-1, with one shutout in 11 games this season with Manitoba. His 1.37 GAA is the lowest in the AHL and his .945 save percentage places him second in that category.

The sight of Luongo being helped off the ice like that is a nightmare for Canuck fans. If luongo is done for an extended period of time, the Canucks are done for on many levels. No more Sundin, no playoffs, and maybe time to rebuild. There are the positives of using cory schneider or picking tavares/hedman

hey jim, ersberg has a better chance to win the vezina than hiller. ersberg actually plays games. anyways, it's unfortunate to see what's happening to the star goalies in the league. especially the way turco is playing right now. i don't think i have ever seen turco suck so bad. so who is left? lundqvist, ellis, kiprusoff (who hasn't been doing great either), giguere just sucks (f*** the ducks), it's gonna be interesting to see who it's gonna be. but my prediction is lundqvist. oh yeah and jim... i am a Kings fan. GO KINGS GO!!!!!

Wow. Brodeur, DiPietro, Fluery, now Luongo??? The season is just barely a month old! At this rate, I think its safe to say Jonas Hiller is winning the Vezina this year.
