You would think after 10 years of hockey the city of Nashville would be crazy about the sport, but that’s not necessarily the case.

I think our ownership group has done a good job emphasizing a connection to the local community to get support. Now the team just needs to continue to have success and bring more and more fans out.

The local ownership group brought out more businesses and helped not only to fill-up some of our luxury boxes, but the seats as well. They’ve tried to work out more local promotions, too, which spreads hockey knowledge around the city.

You can still walk around the city and see people who are oblivious to their city even having an NHL team. There’s still some work to do, but that just comes along with having success and moving on into the playoffs, because that’s where you feel the real hockey atmosphere and attract more fans.

That’s one of the things the guys enjoy about Nashville. You look at some of the big hockey markets like Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and all the other Canadian markets and, yes, it is incredible to play in front of those fans.

However, when you just want to be a regular person, it’s difficult. You can’t go out and have dinner with your family without bumping into someone who knows who you are, whereas here you feel secure with your family; you feel like you can go out and be yourself. You’re not noticed and you’re able to fly under the radar and live a healthy life away from the rink.

But just because we don’t have the same number of fans doesn’t mean they aren’t equally as passionate. We have a section in our rink – I think it's 303 – and they call themselves the “Cell Block.” They try to bring different jerseys, they paint their faces and make their own signs. They really help lead the charge and help give us a little bit of extra jump when it comes down to needing encouragement from our fans – they really get the motor running.

We still need to continue growing our media exposure, however. Our media outlets do an exceptional job with what they have, but it still needs work.

We need a little more airtime on the radio and TV and to be mentioned more often in the newspaper. With a larger section in the paper, fans, or just the average person flipping through, would notice the stories and hockey.

When you only see a small section on hockey, it’s hard to take it seriously. It looks like a boxing article or a something with less importance.  However, when you print a more elaborate page, like the Toronto Star, which is like a second version of The Hockey News, then you’ve got hockey page after page.

Also, things like those poster inserts, which get people involved by collecting those types of memorabilia, are important.

I’d like to see the media do extra things to create a greater awareness.

Dan Ellis was drafted 60th overall by Dallas in 2000, but played just one NHL game before hooking on with Nashville at the start of last season. By the end of the 2007-08 campaign, Ellis had taken over as the No. 1 and started for the Preds against Detroit in the first round of the playoffs.He will be blogging for THN.com throughout the season. I think predtors are a young strong team that can maybe win a stanley cup if they worked a little harder. I also think that some of the team hasn't played their hardest. And that maybe next year (this probably wont happen but) we can get Radalouv back.That would be nice because with Arnott, Dumont and Radalouv we would score WAAAAAY more points. Well thanks for reading my thoughts.

William, I agree... Unfortunatly, it is not the positive news we get a Preds fans in those "other" news sources... The Tennessean does rip off all sports in their respective seasons.. Don't get me wrong, I love the Titans, but I could care less in their offseason about who went to the bath room and when...

Dan, You are absoutlety right about sports coverage in the Nashville Tennessean. I am a baseball and hockey fan and could care less about other sports. They do not put baseball or hockey on the first page of the sports section when their sports are in season. It is ridiculous to put football on the first page in baseball season. Baseball is regulated to the third or fourth page. Somebody in the sports department is very stupid. There are avid hockey fans in Nashville who would like more hockey coverage but we get more news from the canadian press in the Hockey News online. It's a shame. Wm

Here is the bottom line folks. If the product is good, it will be successful. I have been a Preds season ticket holder since Day 1. They have an excellent product, but the NHL could do more to market the game. Let's take the NHL network channel: Put more games on!!! I am so sick of NHL On The FLY running 24 hours a day. Why not show more games on the American channel, like they do on the Canadian channel. I find it amazing that the same channel has two different line-ups for the two countries. Does anyone have a clue as to why that is. As far as the Predators are concerned. Leipold was a good owner, but his marketing group was the absolute worse in hockey. Good owners surround themselves with good people. he did with the game itself, but he failed terribly at it in other departments. That group of bozos he had approached businesses as if it was their obligation to buy suits and tickets instead of telling them how it would benefit their company. I am hoping, at it appears so far, that the local ownership is using that approach and it is working. In stead of bashing other teams, why don't we take that energy and use it to grow the game of hockey and the league. Get the revenue up and look at expansion in the future. Who's with me???

This is dumb, Nashville has plenty of fans and always sells out there last few games and they have sold out their playoff games (last four seasons) but the only thing they lack are corporate sponsors which their new ownership group has improved. The grizzlies are barely breathing after awful attendance in on of the best markets. Nashville actually has one of the louder arenas when there fans show up to important games and their ticket prices have gone up. Until you have experienced a game in nashville I wouldn't speak of relocating to Winnipeg.

Detroit averages 20K+ every year, second only to Montreal in yearly attendance - for a very long time. So what if they sell some tickets for $ 6.00? Detroit will sell more tickets on their worst day than Nashville's best day, and most other teams too. Detroit probably sells more tickets on the road than Nashville does at home. So let's stop these ridiculous comparisons. If you want to talk about fan support, call me when you get 2 million for a Stanley Cup parade.

There was a reported crowd of 4,000 at the Memphis Grizzlies-New York Knicks game recently. I wouldn't say that basketball is more popular. The NHL is eclipsing the NBA. The key: if the NHL gets off of Versus and onto ESPN, it's a lock. People who bash the NHL don't know anything. Bettman isn't the smartest commissioner, but give it a rest. There won't be any Canadian cities getting teams soon and the NHL in the U.S. will thrive. Without it, it would be just another pathetic sport like Canadian football (sorry to Canadians, but that's reality).

to bill, hockey doesn't belong in nashville tennessee. Stop commenting and read a hockey book. How many authors/players/agents, or even equipment managers hail from Tennessee? Hockey is best appreciated with ice and snow. A nice place like Winnipeg would probably work. I was glad to see that a group of fans in "section 303 I think" cares about your team. R.S.A. forever GO SENS!!!!!

The fact that Nashville has an NHL team and Winnipeg doesn't is just WRONG... Would if Tennesse lost the NFL or NASCAR.. and it came to Winniepg and no one cared about it.. no one went? Think about it. Look if a city is awarded a sports team and doensn't instantly embrace it, it was a MISTAKE to put a team there. Relocate the Predators and give Nashville an AHL team. They'll still have hockey there.
