Getting the virtual Dion Phaneuf to play like the real one is no easy task.

Last week I discussed my personal road from playing hockey to the video game world. In this blog I’ll get into what goes into the making of a video game like NHL 09.

Although I had played hockey and played video games and had even been a game tester, I didn’t know anything about making one.

A video game development team at EA Sports is made up of producers, development directors, software engineers (SEs), animators and artists. Producers are in charge of the vision and design of the game along with the features that go into the game. They also lead the different groups that make up the team, such as gameplay, audio, online, game modes, etc. Producers are responsible for working with marketing, finance, PR, media and focus groups.

We also work very closely with the NHL and the NHLPA. They are terrific partners. We all want what’s best for the NHL, the sport of hockey and our game. I sometimes get asked why we don’t have certain NHL rookies in the game when we ship the game. It’s because we can’t add a player to a roster until he’s played at least one NHL game. But we update the rosters online for people to download so everyone gets to play with or against the rooks.

The goal of our game is to offer an enjoyable hockey video game experience, while being as authentic to the sport as possible. Here is the work we need to do for a player like Alex Ovechkin.

•    He needs a 3-D head that looks like him
•    He needs to have all of his authentic equipment
•    He needs all of his stats and bio information
•    He needs all of his attributes – speed, shot power, etc. – correct
•    He needs hundreds of thousands of lines of code to give him artificial intelligence telling him what to do 30 times a second
•    He needs thousands of animations for shooting, skating, deking, etc.
•    He needs to be hooked up to the controller so people can try doing what he does in reality
•    The puck needs real physics so after he shoots, he can score

Now, multiply all of those by hundreds of players, teams and leagues and you start to see the difficulties of making it all come together, especially when deadlines are involved.

In the end, though, there is no place I would rather be. When I get fan letters from kids and parents telling me how much enjoyment they get from the game or that they learned about hockey through our game, it always puts a smile on my face.

A native of Flushing, N.Y., David Littman was drafted by the Sabres in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He spent four years at Boston College before turning pro in 1989. Over the next 10 years, Littman would play in the ECHL, IHL, AHL and NHL (with Buffalo and Tampa Bay). Wow...I didn't know the PC version was so off the target...good thing I bought the PS3 one...I won't repeat myself, and Aaron's comments (very good points...rebounds are so hard to knock in...) but I truly wish for 2010 that there is a real career sim. Contracts, draft, training camp, shifting line-ups according to player performances, retired numbers, etc, etc, etc. I don't think it's asking too much since they could do it with base-ball (maybe even other sports, but I only own NHL09 and MLB08 The Show concerning sports). Come on Littman! Every year gets better (except for PC users i notice)! For 2010, give the ultimate career sim! And please...don't forget PC users...to me, PC is the platform that should give the most possibilities...

You (EA-sports) screwed the people who like to play hockey on there PC. You try to lure them with so called screen shots for the PC, the Pro-mode that would be awsome like the X-box version. Totaly crap because these screen shots are from the X-box version. Pro mode sucks big time and i can't say that its the same like the X-box. For the X-box the game is great, but you (EA) have totaly ignored the PC users. They also have the right to play a hockey game that is different than the game from the year before, and that difference is marginal. You should be a shame to be a hockey lover. Most PC gamer i spoke to can't afford a X-box, so they have to play there games on the PC. You gave all these buyers falls hope that the PC game would be the same as the X-box version, you lied about that. This comment could go on forever and i would hope you have the guts to respond to all dissapointed PC-users, but that will be whisfull thinking. So to close this one out, NHL09 for X-box is just fine, but again you f.....d the game for PC.

-Best hockey game ever ! -MORE THAN 6 HEAD SELECTIONS IN PLAYER CUSTOMIZATION PLEASE. My friends & I made a team of all of us & it was pretty hard to make us all look different.

Hey David, I love the game great job! I just want there to be better stuff for the Dynasty Mode, like Trade deadline were tghe other G.M's call you through out the day for trades. Also the Draft isn't that great Maybe next game do what the NBA games do and re-live the last draft. Other than the that the game is awsome

David: I really enjoy NHL '09 on my XBox 360, especially the Be a Pro mode. I haven't even touched the GM-Dynasty mode yet, which is my usual option. Just 2 quick suggestions (if you or EA cares to hear them): 1. Retired Numbers: If an organization's retired a number, no one on the current team should be able to wear it. 2. Front of the net battles: When scrambling for a rebound on a shot in front of the net with traffic, I'll end up checking instead of gaining control of the puck and shooting. I'm not trying to knock someone off balance, I want the puck. I think there's something else, but love the game. Thanks again.

why is the pc version so sucky? it lacks a lot of the features that the consoles have. the Be A Pro mode on pc is just normal season mode with position lock on and some coach feedback. can't send your guy to the minors as it was advertised. a lot of the things advertised are not in the pc version. pc version is always a watered down. the gameplay is fun, but the lack of details and features kills it. ea needs to get off their butts and strop resting on their laurels.

Mr. Littman, the Be a Pro mode is an insanely good idea. After playing MLB the Show 2008, I was thinking : EA Sports should think of something like the "Road to the Show" in its next game. Imagine my surprise when I found out the Be a Pro mode was in there! The game is the best out of every one of them so far, but I still have one little complaint. The Be a Pro mode, when you can't get your PS3 connected to the Internet, gets a bit redundant because you are the only player moving around. Everyone else's stats isn't taken in consideration, and there lacks movement through the line-up. Besides, why is every team in the league rocking the trade chopping block, while my team stays completely inactive? My suggestion for 2010, keep it that same, just add a little bit of challenge by letting the other players's stats have an impact on the season. Add in contracts as well and we will be close to the perfect career simulation!

You and you're team have made an excellent game. I would like to see more from the customization aspect, but other than that: flawless. Looking forward to 2010 and more!
