According to Canadian sports network TSN, the NHL has decided not to suspend Dallas Stars captain Brenden Morrow, or fine coach Dave Tippett after Morrow was issued an instigator for a fight with Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown Tuesday night.
An automatic one-game suspension for the player and a $10,000 fine to the coach is levied on the team if an instigator penalty is called within the final five minutes of a game. However, the NHL reserves the right to review each case.
Morrow fought Brown after the King hit Mike Ribeiro into the boards. Brown was ejected and handed a five-minute major for boarding, though no further discipline is expected for him.

Did anyone really see this as it happen. I was lucky enough to be at the game and not to far away to see it happen. Yeah it is unfortunate that a player was slightly hurt on the play. but if it was a serious injury why was he one of the shooters in the shoot out. As for Morrow, I'm sorry that should have been an automatic. Lets see what plays out when the Kings face them tomorrow in Dallas. I wonder what had happen should it have been Ivanans going after someone on Dallas for a hit like that. Oh and by the way "John" that was a clean hit. Ribeiro was just caught off balance after a spin around shot to try and win the game. If you look Closely there was no initial arm in the air indicating a Penalty. not till after Morrow came in with his gloves off and they saw Blood on the Ice. However like I said we will have to wait and see the out come tomorrow in Dallas. Maybe we get treated to a new Rivalry like the one in Colorado & Detroit a few years back. Maybe this is what the NHL needed. For the player to take matters in there own hands. but let it be clean and not another Bertuzzi incident.

I'll second Carrie's nomination for next NHL commissioner.

Carrie--and that is exactly what Boll did. Dorsett nearly got his head taken off the shift before (along with being targeted all game for beating up Tucker in the first period) so Boll's line was up next and he stuck up for his friend/teammate. Because Boll lead the league in fighting majors last year AND he is on the blue jackets the "automatic suspension" is in play. Because it is Morrow--the captain of a cup winning team, he and Tippet are off the hook? Blatant favoritism and Boll, Hitchcock and the Blue Jackets should be outraged.

I agree the league seems to apply the rules at random- even though Boll's situation was reviewed under an automatic rule, it was knocked down. Morrow doesn't deserve to be suspended- that was the right call. Morrow was standing up for a teammate who got his bell rung and was bleeding all over the ice. That's what the captain should do.

I would like to nominate Jessie to replace Bettman as Commisioner of the NHL. I immediatly thought of the same incident with Boll and Hitchcock being suspended and fined because they are part of an organization that is not respected by the league and Boll is known as an energy guy rather than the team captain. As long as this league makes up rules and then makes exceptions for their star players it will not be respected by anyone, including its own fans. Anyone who doesn't agree with this just go back and watch any game that Chris Chelios has been involved in since he joined Detroit.

How is an instigator penalty even appropriate here? Brown threw the original cheap shot hit. That IS the instigation! How can Morrow be the instigator? The response from the victim is not THE act of instigation. The NHL should get rid of this rule ASAP!

Why does the NHL even bother having rules if they 'reserve the right to review' every case? Hitchcock and Boll fell under the 'automatic' rule a few weeks back vs. Colorado, now for whatever reason, the NHL decides not to apply the same rule here. The NHL does a great job of breeding contempt within itself. Every rule in the NHL has a 'caveat' so why don't they just publicly declare that they are making them up as they go along, because it is essentially what they do anyway. The B.S. review situation that took place in Minnesota vs. Columbus was yet, another example. The very next night the identical situation played out with Detroit and Anaheim, yet it got handled properly. What a farce.
