Will Jaromir Jagr's No. 68 join Mario Lemieux's No. 66 in the rafters in Pittsburgh? (Photo by Bruce Bennett Studios/Getty Images)

The natural thing to lead off with for this week’s mailbag would be some sort of slick Halloween reference.
However, seeing as the real news has been more of a sphincter-tightening scare than any Vincent Price, Christopher Lee or Hilarious House of Frightenstein memory, I’ll avoid the obvious and get right down to business.
Hi Adam,
I completely agree with you about the recent Sarah Palin promotions in Philadelphia and St. Louis. These are horrible PR stunts using the captive audience of a hockey arena to promote a non-objective cause. I also agree that it's no surprise both the Flyers and Blues had a case of bad luck after.
My question is: when is it appropriate to use hockey for a PR stunt? I am not sure if you heard what happened in Sioux City, but the Musketeers of the USHL donned pink uniforms, asked a breast cancer survivor to drop the puck, and raised more than $38,000 in the (local) fight against breast cancer.
This is a gimmick I can live with, even if it is also not objective.
Mike C., Texas
Hi Mike,
Forgive me if this sounds naïve, but I’m having a hard time seeing the breast cancer cause as especially partisan. If there are pro-breast cancer groups of people out there, it is my sincerest hope they all contract it and cut down on their membership as rapidly as possible.
Excessive use of sarcasm aside, I’m all for hockey teams associating themselves with organizations formed in the spirit of benevolence and compassion. It’s only when I see teams allow themselves and the sport to be used for craven political subterfuge that I get ornery.
Adam,
What exactly is the process for deciding if and when a certain player gets his jersey retired by a team? Do you think Jaromir Jagr's jersey is going to be retired by Pittsburgh or New York? For a guy with so many accomplishments it seems unfair for his jersey to go un-retired.
Jonathan Connery, Bronx, N.Y.
Jonathan,
There is no defined process in the NHL for jersey retirements. That’s why a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs can get away with the harebrained notion of simply “honoring” their greatest players and not retiring anyone’s number.
Jagr? I doubt he’ll get the treatment in Manhattan. But if the Penguins don’t retire his number, Mario Lemieux should have his ownership license revoked by the league.
Oh wise and overworked Adam,
Would you be so kind as to share your opinion on my pondering? I will do my best to frame a question. With all this silly talk of another team in Toronto somehow absconding all media attention in Canada, and the ridiculous assertion by the NHL that they will relocate to Kansas City or Las Vegas, do you think these are really the best options?
Or do you think a market like Seattle, with an available building (the now vacant Key Arena), four notable billionaires (Paul Allan, Howard Shultz, Billy Gates and former Canucks owner John McCaw) and three world-class giants (Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks) might be more viable?
And yes, I suppose that was really two questions. I will work on this for next time. Thanks kindly.
Craig, Vancouver
Oh perceptive and regular question-submitter Craig,
First of all, although I am down with jive-talking terms that sound only half as awkward when a 36-year-old Caucasian man writes them as they do when he says them out loud, I’m certainly not down with Nevada or K.C. as first choices for relocated NHL teams.
Another team in Toronto, though, is something I couldn’t be downer with. Which is not to say Seattle wouldn’t be a good option; it just seems to me that, if the name of the NHL’s game really is about the generation of revenue, the absence of a second Southern Ontario team is a league philosophy that borders on the criminally stupid.
Adam,
Is it still possible to include money in trades for players?
David Simon, Oakville, Ont.
David,
It is not. Although if birthday wishes really do make dreams come true, give Brian Burke about 10 more years and it will be again.
Hey Adam!
I love your columns and I read them every week. My question is, do you think the Flyers are going to stand pat with the team and coaches they have now, or is Paul Holmgren going to pull the trigger on some moves to shake things up a bit, considering the poor start they got off to?
I understand they are right up against the cap, but they could sorely use some blueline help and I hear Toronto has an excess of D-men. Any chance of something happening there? Thanks!
Kyle Creelman, Philadelphia
Hey Kyle!
Your Flyers have picked up the pace after losing six straight, which is the reason I doubt Holmgren’s trade trigger finger is all that itchy right now. Still, there were rumors last year about his interest in Leafs blueliner Tomas Kaberle – and with the injuries Philly already has suffered to its defense corps, it’s natural to believe that interest hasn’t gone away.
What you should be hoping for is an extended slide in the standings by Toronto; the more they lose, the more willing Kaberle may be to waive his no-trade clause and accept a deal to a true contender.

Karberle would never get traded because he's got the NTC (no trade clause) and no one would want him because he's got the NSC (no shoot [the puck] clause).

Another team in southern ontario would be perfect. Then we can have a competition to see who gets good faster. Leafs suck. Between Kaberle and Kubina I would rather keep Kubina. Kaberle is the smarter of the two, but size rules and Kubina's shot can kill a rhino.

I agree Toronto is prime for NHL relocation. I'd love to see some teams move North of the border insteed of going to Vagas or KC. I grew up in North Jersey as a Ranger fan in a US hockey hotbed (3 teams) I lived in Tampa for awhile and now Atlanta for 2 1/2 yrs. The fans in the South don't support the teams and don't deserve them! As much as I like being able to see the Rangers at least 2 times a yr. I think this team should be relocated (pref. in Can.). I went to see them last season for the 6th game of the season, a remach of the playoffs against the Rangers and 1) there were more Ranger fans there 2) a 14 thousand seat arena was not even 1/2 full... AN EMBARASSMENT!!! Bettman look North not the mid-west!
sulko (Posted 2008-11-01 16:00:21)
Another team in toronto is really not that hair brain of an idea. Hamilton would be great but they have too many hoops too go through, so plan b is to put another team in this hot bed. Why is Balsille being blackballed... Oh yeh cause he will not kiss bettmans --- !!!If new york can and california, than canada highest populated area can handle this.. Bring back the jets and Nords and to the metro toronto area. I am not saying expansion I am for relocating teams that areNOT being supported in there attendance ans corp communities. Oh by the way lets keep this a politics free zone because all politcians will find away too screw anyone on any stage
Dirty Jersey (Posted 2008-11-01 13:13:05)
The reason not to have Palin drop the puck is SIMPLE!! Just take a look at what you wrote J.R. You're still upset and bitter and you got mad about seeing another critique of the incident. You're email also exposes the anger you would've had if Obama or Biden dropped the puck for those games insteed! There's a reason that she got booed... b/c A LOT of people didn't want her there! In a country divided roughly down the middle, logic would say that the same would hold true for the fan base... So the LOGICAL conclusion is... no politics= everyones happy

My Rangers have been good about retiring numbers until last season. They took all the single game tickets for the Leetch night and gave them to American Express at a much higher price. The noise level at that game was not like others as there were many first game people there instead of every night fans. So what do the Rangers do? This year we get to retire Adam Graves number 9. Graves mailed it in the last three years he played. He was a minus a million and was a prime reason we did not make it to the playoffs. But....oh did Adam kiss up to the press who gave him a free pass bad game after bad game. He went to hospitals though and was great to the kids after the game. Thats not what I pay for. I pay to see a player work on the ice not off. A number should be retired for greatness on the ice, a Hall of Famer like Number 9 Andy Bathgate. After so many fans complained, the Rangers will also do something for Bathgate this season. The Rangers made so much money on Leetch night they wanted to take advantage of the fans love for Graves the person, the good guy. The real hero was the great Andy Bathgate, a Hall of Fame great player on the ice that the Rangers forgot all these years. Shame on the Rangers for putting up Graves number 9 next to Hall of Famers like Messier, Gilbert, etc.

Please, spare me of unpartisanship of the US as a whole, giving the rights for national wide advertisement on TV for different political campaigns. This is not the way it works in the rest of the Western World.
Your whole poltical system is corrupt and forcing for example a third candiate as rich and famous as Ross Perot in 1992 to be able to get at least 20 percent of the votes. In most other countries there are many more than two candidates/parties having the chance for office.
Your workers on the ground is suffering from unemployment, twelve hour working days and massive illegal immigrant numbers forcing this to happen. At the same time your country are turned into a military state.
Dave (Posted 2008-11-01 03:19:18)
From what i hear Kaberle will not waive his NTC. You all know how hard it was for the leafs to force mccabe too; well it will be 10X harder for them to do that to Kaberle....he doesn't want to play anywhere else.
Rangersfan101 (Posted 2008-10-31 23:14:08)
Sarah Palin was a gimmick by McCain. Palin is a cheerleader more than anything else. And she is a complete retard and should be moved to another planet.
And Go Rangers!!!!!!!

Adam will not drop it and it is like a dog with a bone (who knows no better). He is off on the Palin issue because Palin is my first choice. I am right because is St. Louis (that is a Saint Louis because saints are morally right) and my team will win without Legace ( who by the way tripped on the red carpet). You are incorrect adam and i am not pleased to inform you of this, so whats right is right.
THE LIGHTNING EXPRESS (Posted 2008-10-31 22:03:32)
Maxime...I don't think he would fit into the Habs D-Corps for two reasons. 1 Where and who do you have to dump to get Kaberle, and 2. The habs play a hitting defensive style, and the take care of their back end first. Kaberle is a offensive D-Man, and they already have that in Markov, it just wouldn't work.
James Robinson (Posted 2008-10-31 18:43:30)
Really Adam? You can't let the Palin issue die? You actually had to bring it back by choosing a statement from a "supporter". As many detractors (myself included) stated in response to your last column on this issue, you would have been squealing like a little girl if Obama was dropping that puck. Additionally, Palin did not speak one word to the crowds. She dropped a puck; end of story. Your bias is showing (again) and it is getting really old.
Nick W. (Posted 2008-10-31 15:28:38)
Maxime: That is a deal. All you have to do is send Higgins over and a 2nd round draft pick. lol
Maxime (Posted 2008-10-31 14:42:49)
Now here's a player the Habs could use...Kaberle. Forget the Gabbo and Sundin stories...Kaberle would fit in perfectly next to Hammer, just behind Markov and Komisarek....
