OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Friday.
The NHL team said doctors will remove a bone chip that was dislodged from his right knee during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Sunday. A team spokesman said Alfredsson is expected to be out of action for 10-14 days.
Alfredsson has recorded two assists in two games this season. The 35-year-old right-winger had 89 points (40-49) in 70 games last season.
Ottawa took three of four possible points from the Penguins in Alfredsson's native Sweden last weekend. The Senators are home to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
Alfredsson has recorded 849 points (331-518) in 855 career NHL regular-season games. He has 80 points (43-37) in 101 career playoff games.

Senators fans will ALL soon LOVE Jason Smith. I had to watch him play my Flames for years, and this guy is a player, and a leader. Brass Balls baby, a hockey player's hockey player.
Good luck Alfie.

ron, one of the reasons why i suspect he is getting the knee done in the first place is likely because there's a 'lifer' deal hangin in front of him at the moment that hasn't been released.

Who ever is doing the surgery..don't slip !! It's an expensive knee. As long as Alfie is healthy and playing the Sens will go far this season. Can't wait for tomorrow's game against Detroit. I happy Heatly is wearing the C, playing like a man on a mission. Can't believe how well Jason Smith and Jarrko Ruuto played last week. Ruuto is now my favourite player. GO SENS GO

Great news for Sens fans, its unfortunate he won't be out longer. If he plays less than 70 games, Ottawa management gets to keep him for next year at a rock bottom price. If Alfie plays over 70 games and gets 70 or more points he's a free agent and you have to sign him to a 7-10 million dollar contract extension. Even former Tampa Bay, Detriot and Pittsburgh don't have such few guys locked up to such big money. Ottawa would do well to have this guy not get his option as long as injuries are nothing serious.
