THN.com Logo Tournament: The Finale

First there were hundreds, now there are two. And, they’re in the same province.
The Montreal Canadiens and Rimouski Oceanic took very different roads in getting to the final, but a boost of grassroots support for both Quebec teams have them vying for the enviable title of THN.com’s Logo Champion.
Right from the start, Les Habitants looked to be strong contenders; they have the tradition, the colors and the large fan base, plus an iconic logo to boot. In beating Boston College, North Dakota and Detroit, the Canadiens knocked off two No. 1s and a No. 2 from our original THN rankings.
Rimouski, though no underdog, beat several game challengers en route to its spot in the finale. The Oceanic, No. 1 in the Quebec League and the only team from that circuit to make the bracket of 16, rode their fans’ support to a stunning upset of the Chicago Blackhawks in the quarterfinal, not to mention tough victories over the ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators and Ontario Reign.
So it comes down to this, Montreal versus Rimouski.

LOL WOW, I dont get how that ugly shark logo made it, I mean come on people even the san jose shark is nicer than that. Either way on one side it was montreal due to the history Im guessing and as for the other side it must be a scam or something because Blackhawks should have won BY FAR!
I agree with the person who says that shark logo looks like a roller hockey league or one of those kid leagues.

Out of these two, Rimouski Oceanic is BY FAR more appealing, but it IS a popularity contest. I'm glad the Reign made it so far, being they haven't had their first game yet (we have season tickets, and I CAN'T WAIT to go!!!!! :)

I’m sorry to say it but the Montreal logo is not very appealing.
The problem with this is people are voting for the teams more then the logos.
If I was to look back in this contest and vote for just the logos and not the teams, Montreal would not be in the top ten. North Dakota, Boston College, Ontario Reign and many other out there are more eye catching then Montreal, Toronto or Philadelphia.
This logo championship was more based more on team popularity (or maybe a computer programmer) then how the logo look.

For what it's worth the Habs logo is a nice simple logo with all the history that goes with it. The Oceanic one looks like something out of the ECHL or a roller hockey league. How did this beat out Chicago? IMO the Black Hawks logo is the best.

A fleur de lis, a shark which is also a ship makes Rimouski's top Montreal's anyday. I bet that some guys who play for Rimouski haven't even noticed how their logo is a 3-1 puzzle. GO RIMOUSKI GO!

You have to admit that Rimouski's logo is better than Montreals old, traditonal one. A shark is way cooler than the C with the H in it.

The Habs ? nahhh since it's nothing fancy or ever really funky.
The Oceanic is a great logo that clearly says something.
Too bad London fans but we all know the Knight's logo is awsome.
Is also too bad Rimouski is hosting the Cup this year. That logo will be plastered everywhere when they lose the QMJHL then the Cup on home ice. They do not have the team to back a great logo this year.

Je suis designer graphique, et même si je n'ai pas la vérité absolue sur la question, je peux dire que selon plusieurs critères, ces deux logos sont très bien réussis. À savoir si ce sont les meilleurs, là ce n'est qu'une question de goût personnel. Mais je peux dire que les deux sont très équilibrés, ont beaucoup d'impact et se découpent de loin. Plusieurs logos d'équipes de hockey ont beaucoup trop d'ornementation et sont trop chargés, ce qui fait de mauvais logos, mais ne sont pas nécessairement laids.
Bref, d'un point de vue strictement objectif et non partisan, ces deux logos méritent leurs mentions. Le reste n'est qu'une question de choix personnels.

Hmmmm, would you like to explain a little more on your reasoning for saying rimouski gogogo!!! i mean yea, glad your suportting your team and all, but come on....everyone could just say their team name and say go after it.....I could stand here saying Habs Gogogo after every post but thats dumb...instead i use suppoets to back up why i like them.

Bien que je suis une jeune Rimouskoise de 14 ans, le logo de l'Océanic est sérieusement plus orginiale que celui des Canadiens. Un C et un H à l'intérieur est facile à faire. Bref ce logo représente bien notre merveilleuse région maritime. ^^

Je veux répondre à BlopBlop. Ce n'est pas un requin qui est dessiné sur le logo de l'Océanic mais un bateau qui fend l'eau. Tu parles d'originalité. Celui du Boston College est plutôt clasique. Beau mais pas très original. Celui du Wild du Minnesota est le plus original. Il est même génial.

But what you are forgetting is that its in the finals and your preferance isn't.....ya okay..you have the right to say your opinion but as a matter of fact your opinion is greatly dissapproved of due to the statistics. I still think the Canadien Log is the uglyest log in the NHL. Even if its my prefered team. They need to hire a designer there or something!!!

Pour moins y'a juste le monde du Québec qui vote pour que ces deux clubs soient en final parce que les logos sont pas très beau. Celui de l'Océanic, j'ai jamais vu un requin aussi mal dessiné. Pour celui du Canadien, un C et un H à l'intérieur... Attention l'originalité. Plus beau logo du concours, celui de Boston College.

Seriously, I actually live in Rimouski (originally from Montreal) and to have the Oceanic Logo in the final it is more than the logo itself and they must have been a lot of outsider from out of town voting for it.
I mean let's face it, Rimouski is approximately 30,000 living people so it is not in the same league as the Montreal Canadiens. As most people speak french here, they don't really visit this site.
And for all of you fans that believe your own logo (whatever!!!) should be in the final, well... you're right all of you!!! This is a personel preference nothing more.
Personnaly I prefer the rimouski logo over a lot of others in the QHJML.

barbu, although I've seen the Rimouski logo many times I never noticed the ship or the fleur-de-lys. All I saw was some stupid shark in a wave. But I hate it even after your explaination, Rimouski sucks.

heum Andrew...c'est pas toronto et montréal ... c'est Rimouski et Montréal ...commence par connaître ton hockey et ont discutera après gros nul :). Et au final ce sont des logos rempli d'histoire..surment autant que le Hurricanes t'as raison. Retourne à la base et va rejouer a Stanley cup au super nintendo champion.

This final bracket above is a joke! Are we kidding, the two Canadien logos (Toronto and Montreal) are simple, not creative and ugly logos. These two logos should not even be in the finals (a freakin leaf, what a pathetic logo). I can see very few Americans visit this site, there are a number of better logos from American based teams (the Devils, Hurricanes (new black uniforms are awesome), Rangers, Blackhawks are better than Montreal by far - and that is just a few examples)

i admit, first off, i am a habs fan.
when i look at all the logos, i really do find the habs logo clearest, and i think that's important in a logo. no matter the size, it will always be clear and concise. and for fans, if you wanted to draw it, it ends up easier to do then trying to re-create some of the detail in these other logos!

the Oceanic logo works because it conveys a lot of meaning in a tight package.
One glance and you can see the ship and the waves (reflecting on the town), then the sharkiness & teeth for some aggressive tones, and then you realize the whole thing is a fleur-de-lys (reflecting yet more on the team origin). All this without text or over-wrought imagery such as the hitmen. cool stuff!

Although I'm from Quebec, I have to agree that the large fan base here obviously had a significant impact on the results. However, I think that logos need to be clean and easily recognizable, so I'm not surprised that those with text (e.g. Everblades, Reign, Leafs) didn't make it through. Ideally, you want something that even kids can try to draw. With that said, it would have been nice to see the Blackhawks in the final.

Too bad this is just a popularity contest. The Habs logo is classic, but in the end unimaginative. And the Oceanic logo? You're telling me it's better than the Marlies, the Fighting Sioux, the Red Wings? The team just happens to play in Quebec, and so, their logo must be best.
