Phoenix Coyotes hire John Muckler as senior adviser to the GM

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Former Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler has been hired by the Phoenix Coyotes as the team's senior adviser to the GM.

"We are thrilled to add John Muckler to the Coyotes front office," GM Don Maloney said in a release Tuesday. "His extensive hockey experience and wealth of knowledge will be an incredible asset to the organization."

Muckler is a five-time Stanley Cup winner with over 50 years of pro hockey experience. He has worked as a GM, director of player personnel, director of hockey operations, head coach, assistant coach and player.

After five seasons at the helm of the Senators, Muckler was let go following a trip to the Stanley Cup final in 2007. He coached in Edmonton, Buffalo (where he was also GM) and with the New York Rangers.

While with the Oilers, Muckler served as assistant coach for the Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1984 and 1985 and was designated co-coach during the 1987 and 1988 championship seasons. Muckler became the team's head coach in 1989 and led the club to its fifth Stanley Cup in seven years in 1990.
