Dinamo Riga goaltender Masalskis suffers broken leg in attack

RIGA, Latvia - Edgars Masalskis, a goaltender with Latvian hockey team Dinamo Riga, is in hospital with a broken leg sustained in an attack, the team's president said Tuesday.

Masalskis is expected to need several months to recover before he can return to play for his team in Russia's new Continental Hockey League.

"He is in the hospital and he has a broken leg for sure," team president Viesturs Koziols said. "He also has some problems with other parts of the body, but it is not very critical.

Koziols said Masalskis was on his way home after meeting the rest of the team for dinner in Riga's Old Town when he was attacked by five or six people. Police are investigating the assault, but did not release any details.

Dinamo Riga is second in its Continental Hockey League division behind Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
