THN.com Logo Tournament: Quarterfinals

The road to crowning THN’s ultimate logo is nearing the proverbial Emerald City. With the Round of 16 complete, we move on to the remaining Elite Eight emblems.
It was a tough go for a couple logos that managed to squeak by and a few others are still alive that weren’t expected to make it this far.
The ECHL is being represented by two teams, but the luck of the draw was not in that league’s favor as the Florida Everblades and Ontario Reign faceoff against each other in the quarterfinal, meaning only one can reach the semis.
The Gwinnett Gladiators nearly made it a three-spot for the ECHL, but the Quebec League’s Rimouski Oceanic reeled them in over the weekend and won by a just handful of votes to become the only club remaining from the Canadian major junior leagues.
The most closely watched storyline from the Sweet 16’s early going was the San Jose Sharks-Chicago Blackhawks tilt. What was assumed would be a cakewalk for the Hawks quickly turned into a mass mobilization of Sharks fans, who accelerated their squad out to a 40 percent cushion, leaving some of us in THN’s offices wondering if we were on the verge of the greatest logo upset of all-time.
But alas, it was not to be. Hawks fans united to bring their classic crest out of its slump on the way to a blowout victory.
Will there be a Cinderella upset on the eve of the final four? Can the strong North Dakota fan base unseat the Montreal faithful? Can the classic Winged Wheel fly passed Leafs Nation?

UND - whether it concerns our fine school or our great hockey. The Sioux name and logo has been around for so many years. I see strength, I see history but most of all I see Love. Our students, whether from GF or from Austrailia, etc show so much compassion when the Sioux name is said at Hockey games. I just don't understand the Siouxs' thinking. They should be proud - I know I am as are many, many people surrounding and in GF. People are just in awe when they come to hockey games and never, never has a bad word been said. GO SIOUX!!!!

They are getting benefits. If you are a certain amount of native american you can go to UND for free. The Sioux logo is the best by the way.

Yes, there are some natives that oppose the name at the university. Alway will be, but if you went to the potato bowl parade there were Natives marching proudly wearing Sioux Attire. I guess they don't count.

when you read up about the logo of the fighting sioux.....all you see is controversy after controversy.....from the UND indian association complaing about the name, to own students of the school protesting the name and logo.... The name and logo have been out right banned from pre season games......what is there to be proud of in that?

Even though I agree that the indians should be proud of the Sioux name, just to shut them up finally, get rid of the name and let them start complaining about something more important. They have a lot of work cut out for themselves starting with Mahnomen Indians, Cleveland Indians, FSU Seminoles, Atlanta Braves. Believe me, if UND was paying royalties to use the name and each native got a piece of the pie we wouldn't be hearing a thing.

It would be an opportunity to explain to your granddaughter the pride she should have in the Sioux name. At least you will be talking about it. If the Sioux mascot goes away, it would be another step in erasing the tradition from the history books. Becareful what you wish for.

As a resident of a South Dakota reservation I am appalled to see the continued disrespect of my Dakota neighbors. I hope I never have my granddaughter turn to me at a UND vs Bison game and ask "Grandpa why do they hate us Indians so much?".

The Sioux people have a strong history of being a large and powerful tribe with over 100 years of tradition in our great state of North Dakota and for over 70 years our team also has had a strong history of pride and tradition as well as being known as a strong and powerful team with great hockey, great players and great fans! Yea well....the habs H represents the word hockey.....the letter C represents Canada and the smaller C represents Club. Put it together and you get 100 years of all-stars and amazing hockey seasons, The most stanely cups won....and the greatest NHL symbol with the most honour and glory bound in it. There is no doubt the habs symbol represents hockey at its finest. I would be extremely surprised if people did not come to their sense and recognize the meaning of this symbol. The Sioua may have a meaning......but the habs have a meaning of the history of franshise upon franchise of great hockey and great players. As a result, the original "Canadian Hockey Club", who is celebrating their centenial year, has a strong meaning behind their logo.

the difference between the SIOUX logo and the Blackhawk logo is the SIOUX logo actually has meaning behind it!

the habs logo is definitely not a nice logo. it isn't even one of the nicer "letter" logos, its pretty ugly actually. we're not judging logos by history so there is no reason the CH should be anywhere near the top of the logos.

The Canadiens logo is a basic C with an H in it.....if an expansion team like say, Columbus, came out with that logo, we'd all be laughing at it. The Canadiens logo only has relevance because it is associated with a great team.....and we're judging logos not teams. The best logos easily come from the Sioux and the Blackhawks. Au revoir les Canadiens.

The UND logo has evolved from the Blackhawk logo to a geometric chief's head to the beautiful piece of artwork from a Native American artist commisioned by the Fighting Sioux hockey team's patron saint, and goalie, Ralph Engelstad, in a way to honor the Sioux--the great tribe that heralded from the area, the hockey team/and school, as well as UND's fans. It is truly a piece of honor towards a game that deserves it.

You say Sioux has a better logo than the habs. Look at the Blackhawks logo... so long for the originality... Let's face it, a logo has to be simple and percutant, just like the CH. When you look at the page, the habs logo just sticks out, because of its shape and colour. GO HABS GO!

The Fighting Sioux logo is a beautiful logo depicting a strong, honorable and proud group of people; the Sioux people and the Fighting Sioux sports teams, both take much pride in what they represent. There is no comparison between this logo and the Black Hawks logo, none.

THE CH MEANS CLUB DE HOCKEY CANADIENS. nothing else. in fact habitant is a derogatory term for the players and fans . The montreal maroons fans called the canadiens fans and players habitant. why? because the maroons owners and fans were richer then the canadiens anyways you guys look it up.A habitant is a farmer, which is a very noble profession.

Il y a vraiment du monde qui ne connaissent rien au Hockey pour ne pas savoir qui est les Canadiens de Montréal et son histoire. Je vote pour le logo des canadiens, celui qui a le plus d'histoire, de richesse et de mémoire. Entre vous et moi, le logo des Fighting Sioux est comme inspiré de celui des Blackhawks, non? C'est même le moins que l'on puisse dire. Même profile, même nombre de plumes, disposées de la même manière et au même emplacement, jusqu'au trait des lèvres et au reflet dans les cheveux... Mis à part les couleurs, c'est une grossière copie, il ne devrait même pas être éligible tellement ça sent le plagiat!

Depuis mon tendre enfance j'ai toujours regardé les Canadiens de Montréal à la télévision, je ne serai peut-être pas objectif. Mais forcé d'admettre que le Candiens est au hockey, ce que les yankees sont baseball... Avec tout leurs championnats et leurs traditions. C'est pourquoi avec un peu beaucoup, mon côté partisan, faut se rendre à l'évidence que le logo des Canadiens est le plus "BEAU" avec toute sont histoire et sa riche tradition...!!!

Okay, c'est super cool la partisanerie, vive les Canadiens, vive Montréal, vive les 9 coupes Stanley qu'on va gagner d'affilé, mais là c'est un concours de DESIGN, pis faut avouer que le CH, c'est laid comparé au logo des Blackhawks pis celui des Wings.
Donc, je vote pour les Blackhawks.
Mais si ça peut vous rassurer, le design, c'est un domaine de fille. Donc, de lien de cause à effet, les Blackhawks sont juste une gang d'efféminés.

The Habs logo is actually CHC (a red 'C' on top of a white 'C') and stands for Club de Hockey Canadien. The 'H' used to be an 'A' in the logo, which stood for Club Athletique Canadien. Some references:

Junior dit vrai pour le H. En fait, les Canadiens ce faisait traité d'habitant par les Maroons au tout début de la ligue. Une guerre entre anglophone et francophone. Les anglos jouaient pour les Maroons et les francos avec les canadiens.

Mais, ca ne fait que renforcir le logo du Canadien de Montreal, qui en est un remplie d'histoire. La preuve, c'est que nous ne sommes plus completement sur de toutes ses symboliques tellement il empreint par les legendes.

Un logo, ce n'est pas qu'un simple dessin. Il represente aussi une ideologie, un symbolisme. Le logo du Canadien de Montreal represente beaucoup pour tous les jeunes hockeyeurs du Quebec, du Canada et de bien ailleurs dans le monde a vrai dire.
Remenber a logo is not juste an ordinary picture, it's a symbol. The "CH" is an ideal of achievement for all canadians hockey players and fans. That's why the Montreal Habs logo must win. It's something else, just like The Red Cross for example. That's not the best picto., for sure, but everybody knows it represents much more!

oh oh, other teams then Montreal are in bad shape since RDS (TSN in french) announced that the Habs a trailling in the polls. This poll will get swarmed till the end by crazy habs fans like me who don't really have partial judgment when it comes to the habs and just want Montreal to win whatever they can!

I can't belive the minnesota wild's logo didn't make it to the next round! Hell, I can't belive they didn't win the whole friggin contest! I mean seriously, of all the logo's that were listed, me and all my bear relatives cannot figure out, at all, what the hell you humans are thinking! Now!, you know why "YOU'RE " at the top of "OUR" food chain. Goofy looking, run funny, and have the stupidest looks on your faces when you come across us! BUT!, taste pretty damn good as a snack when needed! Just keep that in mind the next time you're fartin' around OUR! forests!

Despite the fact that the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL didnt get through round 1, it's a good top 8. Ontario Reign is the best left, but i'll support my fellow Q league team Rimouski for their creative and striking logo. GO SEA DOGS!

Maybe not John, I'm a leaf fan that voted for Detriot's logo. Although I got nothing against the logo and wouldn't want to change it I don't consider it the best in all of hockey. I also like the Fighting Sioux and London Knights. My guess is Montreal wins the whole thing unless Detriot or Chicago get enough support which I doubt they will.

Everyone knows Detroit or Toronto is going to win because they have the biggest fan bases. It has nothing to do with the logos themselves.
Personally my favorites are the Fighting Sioux and London Knights, but there's no way they'll beat out the Leafs or Wings.

hah, all this voting has gone to your head.....i'm preety sure the ontarion reign has a COOLER logo than most of the other teams. That what its about the BEST LOOKING logo, not the best team...and the london knights don't always win, who beat them in the first game this year? the Sarnia sting, thats who....
