OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators signed forward Brad Isbister to a one-year, two-way contract on Thursday.
Isbister, 31, had 11 points (6-5) in 55 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. He has 222 points (106-116) in 541 career NHL games with Phoenix, the New York Islanders, Edmonton, Boston, the New York Rangers and Vancouver.
The Edmonton native was a third-round draft choice, 67th overall, by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995.

Izzy was one of the most inconsistent hockey players during his WHL years. He could be the best player on the ice or the worst. To be honest, I only seen him play 1 game (out of the 8 I watched that year) as a Winterhawk and he was totally outplayed by Adam Deadmarsh nightly. Ken Hodge felt Izzy had more potential than anyone on that team to tear up hockey. I could see some moments of glimmer. But he was outplayed by several of his Winterhawk teamates on a nightly basis (Dave Scatchard, Jason Weimer, Adam Deadmarsh) just because they played and he didn't.
As for his NHL career, he certainly plays a lot more. As for being consistent in the NHL, he sure could be better. He really never lived up to his potential and he had a ton of it. Out of that group of Winterhawks, Adam Deadmarsh probably did the most and I wasn't sure he would make the NHL. I was terribly wrong, but I never thought Brendan Morrow would make it in the NHL, either. Brendan battled weight issues for most of his WHL career. He turned into a far better NHL player than I ever imagined and I would say better than Izzy to this point......

ff52- who shook your cage? if your in mb instead of bc then lock down your keyboard till those chains rattle.

I don't get it either although it sounds pretty funny. And to everyone telling Nucks fan to stick with his team through the ups and downs, that is hard when there are only downs.I can only think of two ups in the entire history of the team.

EBGB, I.m a Flyerfan from Mb. I've met fans from Sweden, Finland, etc. BTW, your comment didn't make any sense. I guess you heard the line and couldn't wait to use it.

a flyer fan in bc is the equivalent of a eunuch at a nymphomaniac convention, eh.

craig man tell em how it is........nucks fan doesn't know what the f*&^ to think....oh by the way how does "back-to-back champions...the detroit red wings" sound?
fred (Posted 2008-09-05 18:38:47)
hey nucks fan....i don't understand something,if you were a fan of a team you support them....no matter the ups and downs...leafs fans are a great example, they have been falling off the map for years and still people support them...by no means am i a leafs fan...i hate em...but at least they stick it out...i am a red wings and ottawa fan but that doesn't mean we don't have our ups and downs....the red wings could be the worst team in the league (haha)in ten years and i will still bleed red and white...that's called a fan...not somebody that jump's ship as soon as there's trouble...so if ottawa does brutul in the play-offs again who you gonna jump to eh? florida?

I'm hoping this isn't supposed to be a "top-six" forward the Sens where looking for. As long as he's not supposed to fill that hole in the roster then this is a good signing.

I have been a proud Canucks fan my whole life, and will remain one, and I fully recognise we are going to be a long time waiting before anything decent hits the ice in this city. But any 20 year Canuck fan who isn't already used to this pattern is a twit. It 's like cheering for the Cubs or Seahawks, you don't expect to win, but every once in a while they'll pick themselves up take a long run, get everyone excited and fall just short. As Detroit fans have demonstrated this past year, clearly winning every night isn't all that much fun since they all stopped showing up. So go ahead 'Nucks Fan, pass up your tickets and watch the Oilers on the old boob-tube it just means I can stretch out my legs on the old band wagon while I wait for the next fluke run, but you've wasted a 20 year investment. Red Sox fan waited almost a century to cash in and look at them now. So bugger off 'Nucks Fan, just don't try and get back on this band wagon when the team finds it's footing again (probably once Aquillini and Gillis move on) because you're not welcome. Enjoy Oil country you Poser. Go Canucks Go!

Nucks fan, I feel your pain. The trick is to find a real hockey team to actually care about and then you can sit back and enjoy the Canuck's circus. If they win you can enjoy the fleeting moment, when they lose you have nothing invested.I still take a interest in them as I'm from Van and live in Victoria but I no longer get too worked up about anything they do.I still say give Gillis a chance though, this may take a year or two to correct but with Roberto in goal and a top group of d men(if they stay healthy) there is a little glimmer of hope there somewhere.

Hey Maha and the other guy..bottom line the Vancouver Canucks suck. I am sick and tired of wasting money on them and buying merchanidse etc supporting this team. Was a proud supporter of the team for the last 20 years, but last year was it. I gave my tickets up already and let some other poor soul waste thier money on this loosing team. Roberto is the only reason fans still show up to the building and rumours are rampant he does not want to play here as well. Going to be hard to not watch but hey I am over it..time to move on. Will cheer for Edmonton and Ottawa this year. Canucks fans are just hanging on to non existant hope...good luck on wasting your time cheering for a bunch of loosers..YES I AM STILL BITTER FROM LAST YEAR!!!!!!
Flyer guy 16 (Posted 2008-09-05 11:18:29)
You got it maha, why anyone would get worked up about losing Isbister and Shannon is beyond me. Don't blame Vigneaults system for Isbister being soft either. As if he coaches his players to not bang and hit. Isbister is a fringe player and I say good riddance. Nucks fan, I'm trying to figure out what past glory you're clinging to. What have the Canucks done in the last....well ever for that matter? You're giving up on them because Gillis hasn't resigned Isbister and Shannon? Wow.It's like the Senfeld episode, nothing they have done has worked so far so try the opposite and see what happens. How much worse can they be. That game against Edmonton at the end of last year was rock bottom. I say bring in 3/4 of a new team, leave the d and Roberto alone, and try something new.I'm sure if they get off to a good start you'll be looking for room on the bandwagon.
maha (Posted 2008-09-05 01:59:27)
Hey NUCKS FAN : It's hard to imagine that you are giving up your tickets because this player wasn't resigned. Can't you see why this player doesn't get contracts longer than one season ? Can't see why he doesn't get signed until September every year ? Isbister takes the first offer he gets. He must have been as surpised as anybody when Nonnis gave him a one-way contract last year. Isbister isn't a keeper. This is going to be his 7th team and nobody is going to change the way he plays. There were plenty of chances for bad Brad to get more ice time but he never wanted that. Nucks have signed 8 new guys and replaced Nasland and Morrison who haven't had passion since the strike. This year, the team will be tougher to play against. That embarassing finish to 07-08 still makes me want to puke on your shoes. Gillis has a tough job changing the looser culture in Vancouver. Mike's job is even tougher when fans like you take every chance to possible to call the failures of the past 'good years'.
NUCKS FAN (Posted 2008-09-04 23:45:09)
Hey, Isibister did not have a chance to play alot of minutes with the Nucks. In 55 games he was only a -4 so defensively he is pretty good player considering he was on the 4th line. Playing under Hartsburg will change his style of play. As all Canucks know, we play soft hockey now under our new coaching system and it has hurt players like Isbister use his size to bang and hit. Bryan Murray is a smart guy so he is not only building really good depth on the Sens with Isbsiter and Shannon, but the Sens Farm Team will have a decent line up playing the same style as the Sens. Mucklar wanted to pick up Isbister at the trade deadline 3 years ago at the deadline when he was playing good hockey with Boston and the Islanders. Good move for Ottawa and again another bad move for Vancouver. I have cancelled my Season's tickets this year until Gillies wakes up and signs or retains decent and depth players in Vancouver.
Flyer guy 16 (Posted 2008-09-04 23:34:30)
First Shannon, now Isbister, did Murray see any Canuck's games last year?
maha (Posted 2008-09-04 23:03:59)
.. and 'Bister reels in another team. A 2-way deal means that he won't be a healthy scratch this year. Golly, he's going to have to work to see NHL action this year. Mr Nice Guy won't put in the effort because he's complacent.
Arnold (Posted 2008-09-04 22:43:30)
Isbister for captain.
