Montreal Canadiens look to hold outdoor NHL game at Olympic Stadium

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens are looking at playing an outdoor game at Olympic Stadium as part of their 100th anniversary celebrations.

"It's a project we're considering," team spokesman Donald Beauchamp said Thursday, adding the plan was at "the discussion stage" with the NHL and with the Olympic Installations Board.

He said reports that the game was planned for Dec. 4, 2009 - exactly 100 years from the team's founding - were incorrect and that no date had been fixed for the game.

"It will not be Dec. 4," he said. "There's no specific date, but it's not that one."

Outdoor games have been all the rage in the NHL since the Edmonton Oilers hosted the first one against Montreal at Commonwealth Stadium.

To play at the domed Olympic Stadium, the roof would have to be removed. An OIB spokesman said this week the game would have to be held during the period when the roof is to be redone. No dates have been set for the construction work.

I think that an Ottawa vs. Montreal game would be ideal. Both teams were in the NHA in 1909-10. Retro jerseys, anyone? Ottawa barber-poles and Montreal with a big maple leaf?

Maybe we'll be able to find tickets more easily for that one...

I think after 100 years, a club should be entitled to continue to set standards; especially The Canadians.

Yep! We just finished paying for the stadium in 2006... So it is time to spend some more on a new roof! No but seriously the roof of that stadium is a neverending story here. Nevertheless, I like the idea of an outdoor game there! Go Habs Go!

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
