My associate Adam Proteau deemed the Atlantic Division the second-best in the NHL and who am I to disagree? Other than the Islanders, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see any of the Flyers, Rangers, Penguins or Devils atop the division (or conference, even) when all is said and done.
While the Atlantic features several top contenders, it’s also home to a healthy array of players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 1, 2009. Here’s an examination of the three best UFAs from each of the division’s teams. Click HERE to view my countdowns from the NHL’s other five groupings.
NEW JERSEY DEVILS
Brian Gionta ($4 million 2008-09 salary)
Production has dipped over the past two seasons, but – even if he falters in ’08-09 – his near-50-goal campaign coming out of the lockout bodes well for his wallet.
John Madden ($2.9 million)
It sure doesn’t seem like it, but Madden will be 36 come July 1, meaning he’ll have to settle for a one- or two-year deal.
Johnny Oduya ($600,000)
When many thought the Devils’ blueline would fall apart, the Stockholm native was there to help keep it together.
Other ’09 UFAs – Bobby Holik, Mike Rupp, Kevin Weekes.
NEW YORK ISLANDERS
Mike Comrie ($4 million)
He shouldn’t be confused as a No. 1 center, but the 27-year-old is a solid second option up the middle.
Bill Guerin ($4.5 million)
He’ll be 38 next summer, so his years of 20-goal production are nearly done.
Mike Sillinger ($2.3 million)
Will a 13th NHL team come calling?
Other ’09 UFAs – Andy Hilbert, Joey MacDonald, Doug Weight.
NEW YORK RANGERS
Dmitri Kalinin ($2.1 million)
I was surprised he only got a one-year deal this summer. A big year on Broadway will land him wads of dough in ’09, though.
Paul Mara ($1.95 million)
Can you believe Paul Mara is only 28? Don’t look for him to improve on his one-goal, 17-point campaign as he’ll be hard-pressed to get PP time this season.
Pat Rissmiller ($1 million)
Former Shark will be out to prove he can score like his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame suggests he should.
Other ’09 UFAs – Colton Orr, Thomas Pock, Stephen Valiquette, Blair Betts.
PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
Martin Biron ($3.5 million)
Will battle the Wild’s Niklas Backstrom for the honor of top UFA goalie in 2009.
Mike Knuble ($2.8 million)
The big right winger will turn 37 three days after becoming a free man, but he’s missed only 18 games over the past four seasons. He’s still good for at least 20 goals.
Antero Niittymaki ($1.375 million)
With a goals-against average under 3.00 and a save percentage over .900, he’ll easily find a home as a backup somewhere.
Other ’09 UFAs – Lasse Kukkonen, Ossi Vaananen, Derian Hatcher.
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Petr Sykora ($2.75 million)
The 31-year-old put up totals he hadn’t seen since the early part of the century in ’07-08. He can’t do it alone (he never could), but he certainly belongs in a top-six role.
Miroslav Satan ($3.5 million)
Bigger and slower than Sykora, he’ll give you identical production if all else remains equal.
Hal Gill ($2.1 million)
Brought over from the Leafs at the deadline, Gill was a solid presence in the playoffs. Every team needs a good stay-at-home guy.
Other ’09 UFAs – Kris Beech, Ruslan Fedotenko, Dany Sabourin, Rob Scuderi, Darryl Sydor, Jeff Taffe.

Gallagher what i meant was Biron is better but Nittymaki could potentially get more playing time another team. Just a thought.

I need another year like last one before I'm totally sold on Biron but John H. is right, he's got a great personality, perfectly suited for his position. What he went through last playoffs with his wife giving birth during the pressure cooker that is the playoffs says a lot about him. I don't think Nitty is in any position to be expecting number one duty on any team yet. I wouldn't be too concerned if he left.
John H. (Posted 2008-08-25 12:21:19)
Biron's a keeper (excuse the bad pun). Watching him in his last year in Buffalo and in Year One with Philadelphia, he seems to have shaken his habit of making an eye-popping stop and then letting in a big-time softie 2 minutes later. What a great personality; how can you not pull for the guy? I know we all still love him in Sabre Land!
Gallagher (Posted 2008-08-25 11:23:04)
Sam, It's always good to display loyalty. (especially to a good netminder, I'm a goalie myself )
But if you think Nitty is going to be better than Biron for a cup run..... uh uh. Marty showed some great stuff in the last season, and imho will get even better when he doesn't face as many primo scoring opportunities this year.

Satan & Sykora are playing for contracts. Pens will look to plug-in a guy who can score 25-30 on Sid's or Geno's line, at a reasonable price. Gill will be retained unless he ask$ too much. He isn't slowing down since he's always been slow anyway.
Flyerfan52 (Posted 2008-08-24 21:30:55)
You're right Sam, He could be number one on a lot of teams. As said, I wouldn't mind keeping him. I do expect to lose him.

Sydor back to the bolts would be interesting. Guess Tampa thinks it can use the same team to win the Cup with Lecavelier and St. Louis where Crosby and Malkin failed.
Dave (Posted 2008-08-24 17:18:53)
Its a no brainer--Sydor will win the AARP award for the Bolts next year--don't look for the Pens' UFA's being available for they will be fillers for some teams for draft picks for Sheros' "stew"
whatsthatsmell (Posted 2008-08-24 15:11:10)
Which one of those Penguins will Tampa snag?
Sam Marshallanato (Posted 2008-08-23 18:28:59)
The Flyers should expect Nittymaki to walk as long as Biron resigns (which by the way should happen if the Flyers want any chance at a cup). He has good enough numbers to at least battle for the number one spot ie. he could be the number one in colorado for example. Garth you are insane, Comrie deserves Yashin money with a no-trade clause. Doug Weight too.
flyer guy 16 (Posted 2008-08-23 15:45:22)
I think Comrie's looking for a deal that will expire around the time Hillary Duff gets her drivers license.
Brian Kemp (Posted 2008-08-23 10:15:31)
Hey, Garth, why such a short offer to Comrie? And, by the way, yes, you are amazing.
Flyerfan52 (Posted 2008-08-22 18:04:14)
No worries Tommy P, Homer's probably already negotiating with Biron's agent. I wouldn't mind keeping Nitti as backup or 1A for a couple of years though. There are prospects in the pipeline but I think they're a few years off.
Garth Snow (Posted 2008-08-22 17:31:37)
Mike Comrie won't reach UFA, he's getting a 10 year, 60 million dollar deal! Am I good or am I amazing?!
Tommy P (Posted 2008-08-22 15:42:11)
We gotta keep Biron. There are no ifs ands or buts about it.
Dave (Posted 2008-08-22 13:54:57)
Dimitri Kalinin's 1 year contract was a calculated gamble. The only person who could get decent production out of him was Teppo Numennin, his d-partner in Buffalo from 05-07. With Teppo out last year his play suffered which is why Reiger & Buffalo let him walk.
Scott (Posted 2008-08-22 13:13:12)
I love how the Rangers have some subpar UFA's, but if you look at our RFA's...then it is a totally different story. Byers, Callahan, Dawes, Dubinsky, Fritsche, Moore, Parenteau, Potter, Prucha, Sjostrom, Zherdev.

Should the Canadiens be retiring Patrick Roy's No. 33?
