THN.com's OHL Logo Rankings

Zoom Image

There are still a few classic crests in the Ontario League, but like all major junior circuits, expansion, franchise movements and wholesale makeovers have eliminated many of them. Some of the new creations are quite fetching; others are a dog’s breakfast. No surprise, however, that our top three is composed of teams who found a good thing and stuck with it.

Many animals can be found in the OHL, which makes sense for a game marketed to families more so than other leagues. When done right, we liked the cartoony critters. Others tested our patience and didn’t fare so well.

Over the month of August, THN will rank the logos of 16 North American leagues. Click HERE to go to THN's Logo Rankings Central page and click HERE to vote for your top OHL logo as part of our tournament to discover the fans' choice for the top logo in hockey.

THN's ONTARIO LEAGUE LOGO RANKINGS
RK.
LOGO
TEAM
THE SCOOP
1

London
Knights

The brash knight’s helmet and green and gold motif radiate success.
2
Sault Ste. Marie
Greyhounds
The greyhound is realistic, the backer is subtle. It just works.
3
Windsor
Spitfires
A hockey logo that uses negative space and simplicity? Now we’ve seen everything!
4
Oshawa
Generals

The Gens go way back in history and the red, white and blue lettering gets it done every time.

5
Saginaw
Spirit
Modern eagle gets a little help from a streaking Old Glory.
6
Peterborough
Petes
Another lettering-only classic, the Petes own that font and the maroon and white color scheme.
7
Barrie
Colts

The horseshoe and heavy breath vault Barrie’s colt over a lot of other animal mascots.

8
Plymouth
Whalers
Cartoonish, yes, but the puck shooting out of the blowhole is a genius stroke.
9
Sarnia
Sting
Dangerous-looking bee wields a big stick.
10
Sudbury
Wolves
An oldy, but a goody, the lip-smacking wolf is a major junior staple.
11
Brampton
Battalion
This surly fellow just missed the top 10.
12
Kingston
Frontenacs
Definitely new-school, very unique.
13
Owen Sound
Attack
That’s one serious bear, but we miss the Platers.
14
Mississauga
Majors
Lettering is non-offensive enough, but not striking.
15
Niagara
IceDogs
Definitely better than the first incarnation, but still needs work.
16
Kitchener
Rangers
Not bad, but not original, either.
17
Belleville
Bulls
Big step back from the original realistic bull.
18
Guelph
Storm
Why would a funnel cloud have fangs?
19
Erie
Otters
Otters are cute and all, but cartoony mascots generally don’t rank high.
20
Ottawa
67's
Replacing a classic with an angry puck? Not a favorite around here.

Over the next two months, THN.com will leave the voting on the best logos up to you, the reader. To vote for your favorite, click HERE.

The Sudbury Wolves logo, with its "iron-on transfer lettering" looks like a desperate cry out for recognition - "WE ARE FROM SUDBURY, AND WE ARE THE WOLVES"! Sadly, this team hasn't had anything to shout about for 30 years. Sorry, but fluking your way into the league final following a lacklustre sub-.500 season doesn't count for anything. You've got to try during the regular season to garner any respect in this league. To lose the amateurish look: Reduce the size of the wolf head, put a round crest behind it with smaller, dignified curved text, and you'll double your merchandise sales. KISS principle works everytime.

I have never been a big fan of the cartoonish type of logos, but I love Bramotons! Great colors on those uniforms with the olive green, black, and yellow gold.

I don't buy London's logo being the best...I think it is the trendy choice because of how strong a team they have been in recent years...winning team and by association their logo looks better. If they had been a garbage team the last few years, I am quite willing to bet their logo would not have topped these rankings. Similar thing in QMJHL...I think Rimouski's logo is cool but I have my doubts it is the best. I think it was selected as the best because of the Crosby factor. Obviusly he is gone from Rimouski now but his presence on the team automatically made the logo stand out to even the most casual of Q fans and made the logo seem even cooler than it is.

The Kitchener WW1 sweaters are by far the best in the game.Too bad they dont use them all the time. As an IceDog fan, id say the ranking of our logo is where it should be. It has grown on me over time, but i was thinking the crest was going to be the shoulder patch or something.the colours are good, but the crest is not what I would have chosen.

Steven R. is spot on. Kitchener should go from the copycat look to the commemorative jersey full time. The WWI logo and jersey are dignified and classy and I would be proud to don that jersey to take the ice.

Can't stand the Petes logo. It is quite hideous really. Don't forget about the "hockey stick" in the Windsor Spitfires logo. Very nice. Ottawa 67's: You need a decent team name, before a cool logo will follow. Yes, they've been around since the Centennial, but really. Anyone have any real creativity over there? Brampton Battalion could use a refresh as well. Sudbury Wolves: Not a "goody", at all.

Jeff Hunt should of never changed the classic logo, The 67's are a great junior franchise and there logo should depict that

The Kitchener Rangers should switch to that logo from the commemorative WW1 jerseys they had last season. That jersey was one of the nicest I've seen.

You guys are completely in the wrong about the 67s logo. It's one case where new trumps old. The compact look of the angry puck, getting a lot into a little bit of space without looking cluttered, is good design.

Sudbury should be in the bottom 5 I think. I really like Brampton, very original and good colors.
