We’re smack in the middle of summer, the time when barbecue odors dominate the neighborhood air and certain segments of the population take the term “belly shirt” to horrific extremes

But that’s no reason devout hockey fans should allow their withdrawal symptoms to get the best of them. If you truly want to feel like it’s January (only without the twin terrors of frostbite and New Year’s resolutions), here are a few tips to get you back in an on-ice mindset even in warm weather:

1. Start and finish a trade rumor cycle all by yourself.

Who says professional rumorists and swap-mongers get to have all the fun? By kicking off a whisper campaign among your friends and co-workers – using the most illogical, unworkable-under-salary-cap-regulations, one-sided deal you can dream up – then sitting back and watching the useless debates begin, you’ll think it’s a week prior to the NHL’s trade deadline before you know it.

Then, once a few dopes have seriously bought into it, be sure to whip off a group email in which you condescendingly list the multitude of reasons said deal won’t or can’t happen.

You can’t be labeled a dream-killer if the dreams were closer to drug-induced hallucinations, I say.

2. Using your TV’s remote control, channel-surf for at least 45 minutes in an unsuccessful effort to find a televised NHL game.

Now you know what it’s like to be an American hockey fan in the winter.

3. Embroil yourself in a lawsuit against the New York Rangers.

Ice-dancing girls have done it. The NHL is doing it. Why shouldn’t you?

4. Grab a hockey stick, hold the top of it around crotch level, then run down a street that hasn’t been paved in years.

Should you choose to, something tells me you and this kid will have at least one thing in common.

5. Boo the commissioner.

It’s practically a tradition to empty your lungs in Gary Bettman’s direction at the NHL draft and as you know, the NHL is all about carrying on tradition.

Whether it’s the Predators’ ownership fiasco, the league’s blatant (Jim) Balsillie-phobia, or Bettman’s staunch refusal to say “ah-ah-ah” like this fellow even once, there’s never any shortage of reasons to unload a few raspberries in the general area of the NHL’s top official.

Make a pilgrimmage to the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown PA to visit the arena where Reg Dunlop lead the Chiefs, and skate the surface that Ned Braden stripped and celebrated the Federal League cup. Morley's Dog still stands in Central Park, and the Flood Museum will teach you all you need to know about 1889 disaster. There's not much else happening in Johnstown...but if you're up to it, my parents will cook you a great meal.

Adam, Thanks for that. I nearly burped up my soda watching cookie monster and the count. I couldn't help but see the Bettman-Owner metaphor vividly illustrated. Thank god Cox now carries the NHL Network for here in So Cal.

Thanks Troy but I've got it. I meant the classics are sometimes fun to watch again. Nice to catch those at least once a year.

Mumme, that sounds like fun. Makes the whole year interesting. Also, there's always the DVDs. Slapshot, '72 Super Series, Net Worth, etc. Old stuff but the most of us haven't seen them very recently.

I remember hearing about a dude a few years ago who started a trade rumour like that about Jarome Iginla being traded to Philadelphia, and it got so far that it was written about on TSN. Something about Iginla for Gagne and someone else. That dude later came out in the media and said there was no fact to the rumour, he was just bored and wanted to see how far it would go. That guy is my hero.

My friends and I do something called July Hockey Pools. The 5 of us meet at the local Brasserie each week and to take part in 4 mini hockey drafts. Each draft costs an average of $15. We're on pace to finish July with 12 pools. All poolers must draft off the top of their head only (and after multiple brews). We always use a "snake" drafting system. The first pick is determined by the winner of a rock, paper, sissors championship. Each draft is has different theme (Defensemen only, Goalies only, Any ten players, A player from ten diferent countries, build an east and west all star team, avg. team attendence, etc... have all been used). All themes are decided "on the spot" so you can't really prepare to much. Anyway, that's what my friends and I do in July along with other hockey talk, arguments, etc...Our last draft night is this Thursday...who know's what the theme will be? Either way, I know one thing...at this rate I'll be cheering for just about every goal scored next year!!! September drafts, watch out!

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
