Thrashers re-sign goalie Kari Lehtonen to $3-million, one-year deal

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers have their No. 1 goalie back under contract.

The Thrashers signed Kari Lehtonen to a US$3-million, one-year contract on Wednesday. The 24-year-old restricted free agent earned $2.2 million last season, when he had a career-best .916 save percentage to go along with a 17-22-6 record.

Lehtonen has spent his entire career in Atlanta after being drafted second overall by the Thrashers in 2002.

He has a career record of 75-61-14 with a 2.82 goals-against average and .913 save percentage.

from the nobody asked but i'll say it anyway column, hey mr. craig lowe, let it be known, i'll take kari on my team, any day, any place, any time. it is just a thought, but perhaps you have not done your homework on finnish goaltenders. check into what kari did for the chicago wolves in several seasons. the only thing hotter in wolves hockey games than kari, is the pre-game festivities including the flame throwing fire rockets from the sphinx like wolf paws and the crazy antics of "SKATES," simply put, the best team mascot of any sport in any town at any time. also consider the fact that just because toskala didn't have that great of season with the maple leafs was not because he is a bad goalie, it was because the leafs were led by a bunch of goofs at the top which trickled down to the crappy play of most of the players. now if you have an "in" with mr. waddell and can convince him to trade kari to the blackhawks even up for khabibulin, i would have to think that mr. tallon might just have an open mind. yeah, wishful thinking !!!!!!!!!!

Another dumb a** move on Waddel's part. What is it with Waddel and gimpy goalies. Does anyone remember Damion Rhodes? How DW can keep his job is beyond me. Kolvy is not going to carry the Trasher to the Cup. I would bet on the Leafs making it before Atlanta. That is why I go to the Gladiator's games (ECHL). Same product 1/2 the price.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
