Detroit Red Wings to raise championship banner Oct. 9 against Leafs

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings will raise their 11th Stanley Cup championship banner at Joe Louis Arena on Oct. 9 when the team opens its home schedule against Toronto.

The Wings also announced Wednesday they will face a trio of Eastern Conference teams next season, thanks to the league's new scheduling system. Detroit will play two games each against the Buffalo Sabres, the Atlanta Thrashers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins are the defending Eastern Conference champions and were dispatched in six games by the Wings in last season's Stanley Cup finals.

The full NHL schedule will be released Thursday.

I find it interesting that by saying "Detroit blows", that's what you two automatically think of.

Detroit blows and the only banner they should be raising is one with the Jurassic Park emblem on it because they are the only team with a dinosaur on the roster. Yes I'm talking about you Chelios.

As much as I would love to see the Leafs win in the game, I think we all know it's not going to happen (unless Finger single-handedly shuts down all of Detroit's offense :P).

The Leafs already "no" the Wings have tied them in cup wins. For a couple cups, they weren't known as "The Maple Leafs".

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
