Atlanta Thrashers sign 27-year-old free-agent winger Jason Williams

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers signed forward Jason Williams to a US$2.2-million, one-year deal on Monday.

The 27-year-old right wing had 36 points (13-23) in 43 games for the Chicago Blackhawks last season. He missed 39 games after injuring his groin, then having surgery for a sports hernia.

Williams has 158 points (66-92) in 296 career games with Chicago and Detroit.

the reason why the hawks didn't re-sign him is because he is injured (damaged goods). That's why no other team took him earlier. He is a great player and ran the PP well last year but Chicago knew that he has a slim chance getting over his injury.

why the hawks have not dealt or bought out khabby is beyond me. his ridiculous cap hit just cost us another quality player. its too bad, i was really looking forward to seeing williams and cambell run the point on the PP.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
