Forsberg faces months of rehab before returning to NHL

Peter Forsberg wants to return to the NHL for another season, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be available in October.

After consulting with doctors in his native Sweden, Forsberg was told he would need several months of rehabilitation before he could return to an NHL game, according to the Denver Post.

Forsberg, who turns 35 next week, has been plagued by ankle injuries the past few years, which have also caused other injuries, such as pulled groins.

The Swedish star returned to the Avs in February and played nine regular season games and seven playoff games. He posted a total of 19 points in those games.

Currently an unrestricted free agent, Forsberg’s preference is to re-sign with the Avs. The rehabilitation program mapped out by his doctor, Bertil Romanus, is expected to take several months, meaning Forsberg may not be available to play until Christmas.

According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, a muscle on one side of Forsberg’s foot doesn’t function normally because a muscle on the other side has caused an imbalance.

Forsberg told the paper that if the program doesn’t work “I’m happy with the career I’ve had.”

Originally selected sixth overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1991, Forsberg has 885 points in 706 career NHL games.

He had 14 points in 9 games, highest points per game in the entire league. All these articles about "Why would a team risk it?" mu be written by people who have not actually watched Peter play. If they are smart of course they will risk it. Look at his stats. If he plays, his team wins. If he is injured, then it's up to his team to win on their own, which they usually don't. If he gets his ankle straight, he dominates this league. It's really simple.

Proof: youtube.com search "peter forsberg show". Not peter forsberg show 2. The first one. Looks like he's in another league than the other players.

jimmy..i dont know if u have watched alotta ranger games but jagr has the puck in the corners and behind the net all the time fighting for loose pucks, taking hits, slashes, cross checks etc. he uses his size and body to defend the puck to make plays..to say jagr only plays in the slot is not a true statement..he might not lay someone out like forsberg can n does but hes no punk in the corners

He managed to get 19 points in 16 games? Using those old things he calls ankles? Maybe Foppa isn't that finished after all...

All hail, Peter the Great! Foppa's attitude is the right one; that being said, unless he burns to return to his HOME, Denver, to play his heart out, I'd rather lose him to his injuries. If Peter wants nothing more than to come back- potentially after Christmas (?), then you know, not only Avs fans, but Hockey fans worldwide would love to see him return to his ways of embarrassing skaters up and down the ice. Seriously, Peter returns from a season full of injuries to play with the Avs down the stretch, still injured, and tallies 16 points in 16 games? The “man” is beyond definition. Peter Forsberg is a living legend. I think I speak on behalf of all Avs fans (and Hockey fans) when I say Peter Forsberg is welcome back before Christmas, during Christmas dinner, after Christmas, after St. Patrick’s Day, before Playoff Season, in the middle of Playoff Season, before the last face-off of the season… Peter: you are welcome to grace the Hockey community again, or to bask in the glory of your unspeakable career. WE ALL LOVE YOU PETER (ESPECIALLY IN COLORADO)- AND THANK YOU FOR A GREAT CAREER!

this man is really something when he plays. 885 points in only 709 games? yikes. and he hits like a train out there. this one will do him in, though. the injuries have caught up. that's a tough rehab, even tougher for a hockey player, who relies even more on ankle strength and stability than athletes in other sports. now he'll go the way of other great power forwards who had to succumb to the wear and tear of their own style of play---lindros, neely. those retaliatory hits are exciting, but they take their toll.

john 7oaks.....Jagr (apple) and Forsberg (bananna) are two totally different types of players. When was the last, I mean has Jagr ever went into the corner of the offensive zone to battle for the puck? Its not hard to play through the few hacks and wacks in the high slot. Dont get me wrong I like both players but you cant make that comparision. It is unfortunate that injuries have gotten the better of Forsberg but such is life. ****Andy your a clown****
