Continental League wants compensation for Filatov; winger signs entry-level deal with Blue Jackets

The president of the Continental League in Russia, Alexander Medvedev, is demanding the Columbus Blue Jackets pay $500,000 in compensation for the rights to Nikita Filatov.

Filatov signed a standard, three-year entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets Thursday.

"(The law states) that a contract is terminated only when negotiating indemnity amount," Medvedev told a Russian paper Tuesday. "This did not happen."

Filatov believes his contract with CSKA Moscow expired three months ago and is free to pursue a career in North America when his work visa is processed.

"The lawyers studied all the documents," Filatov wrote on his blog. "There are no contentious issues."

Filatov was selected sixth overall by the Blue Jackets at the NHL Entry Draft in June. The 18-year-old scored 32 goals and 66 points in 34 games with CSKA Moscow’s junior team this season.

In his blog over the past few months, Filatov has expressed his desire to play in North America next season, whether it be with the Blue Jackets or possibly even in the Ontario League with the Sudbury Wolves, who took him first overall in the Canadian League import draft.

Those Ruskies are a hilarious bunch...Columbus will pay for Filatov as soon as they reimburse us for Alexander Svitov. Call it even, sucker.

Just as Russia did during the Cold War, they will go broke, trying to keep pace with North America. The NHL is the real deal, always has and always will be. Here's an idea that could improve Russian hockey, send the KGB to abduct our commissioner and allow him to run your league.

Is there any chance the Alexander Medvedev who rules the Continental Hockey League might be the same puppet as the one that rules Gazprom, Russia's tool to keep Europe shut up out of gaz supply? It would be no surprise to me... Still, I have to admit it is highly hypocritical from Western countries to complain that Russia and China "finally" have enough money to start having western countries to bend down before them. "We" were happy enough for enough decades to pay a low price on manufacturing and polluting industries at amazingly low prices to be stupid enough to complain that "suddenly" Russian hockey has enough money to spend in NHL stars for theirs teams. China doesn't care about hockey, but still, it's another story :) As bad as it is to see former NHL stars move to Russia to be paid out of dubious sources of money,

This makes no sense because Filatov was not under contract. There was no contract to be terminated. He intentionally signed a contract several years back that would free him up to play in North America when he was eligible. I doubt this red tape will stretch as far as Malkin or even Zherdev's red tape did.

If this keeps, teams will be more and more hesitant to take Russians with their picks, whether high or low, in the draft. The Russians and Czechs chose not to renew the IHHF agreement. If they had, Medvedev would've at least gotten his due $200,000. If he wants more than double that, then he should get his behind to the negotiating table and hash out a deal!

What a joke! But it's ok for them to offer a contract to Malkin who is still under contract. The Russian league sucks

There's no agreement in place and neither the NHL nor the KHL owe each other anything in the way of compensation. They are two separate employers and potential employees can go where they please. Now any team looking for one of the truly great Keyboard Coaches? Because I'm interested...
